SCT's 1969 Checkmate V191 Raceboat restoration.

So is there a trick to bending the rail around the bow or the corners at the stern without having the sides pinch in or collapse? Pretty hard to get the rubrail in if the side gap closes up. Or is the aluminum just so soft that it holds its profile?

Karzrus, funny that you ask that question. I inserted a 1’ piece of the vinyl insert and really took my time while bending it around the bow......and it still pinched! So I took a flat bladed screwdriver to bend the gap back out but I slightly boogered up the finish....wasn’t happy! Hopefully the stern bends only being 90’, it won’t do the same, today.

Wonder if Coop knows a trick?

What about using something more solid than vinyl in the opening? A couple of narrow flat steel pieces of the same thickness as the gap (one in the top slot and one in the bottom) while the bend is happening might do the trick.

Trim is finally done. The vinyl insert was a real biatch and I even soaked it in boiling water.......

Had a local metal shop cut me a 1/4” aluminum 3003 transom pad. After sanding the crap out of it......it was relatively shiny. With 1/4” aluminum, 10 ARP thru bolts, a 2” thick transom and glassed in OB knees......should be solid!

(Thanks for the input, StarViper!)

Found a great picture of Bill Combs (Gary Erwin,co-driver) racing the 1968 Havasu Classic in a dual V191 CM. They placed an incredible 4th or 5th over all (even against the tunnels and wings!). Bill went on to place 1st in the v hull division in 1978 Havasu in a CM Enchanter. Checkmates had quite the racing heritage back in the day!

Boat is looking amazing Shannon!!!!! If you coat that aluminum plate with Sharkhide, ,it will keep that finish for a long time.
