setup for Pulse 170

I have a 96 Pulse 170 w/ a 200 mercury 23 pitch tempest prop bolted to the transom. How would you set this combo up for maximum results? Also can someone tell me how to tighten the steering and add weights to the motor? I think this helps with chime walking from reading other threads.

Starting with the last, you don't add weights to the motor. You will want to add solid mounts to the motor, top and bottom. Bottom is easy, you can do that yourself. The top mounts are under the power head, you'll want an experienced wrench help you with those. To tighten the steering, first check if you need it tightened. Grab the back of the motor and wiggle it hard. Is there any play in the steering where it attaches to the tiller arm? If so, you tighten the forward cable against the aft cable. Once again, you may want an experienced wrench to help the first time out. After that, you can tighten it yourself later (about every 3-6 months). You can raise the motor up on the transom as far as the bolt holes and water pressure will allow. Later, you'll want to change the steering cables out for longer ones and put a 12" jack plate between the motor and the stainless steel transom protector for better balance and lift and higher engine heights. You'll also be ready for a 26" Laser II or 27" Tempest Plus props to try.

I have a similar set up, tried a hand ful of props and motor heights.
Found the Turning point to work hands down the best on the small
pulse. My 186 would get CRAZY with a 26" Trophy plus on. I have a
25" laser II which runs ok, but no bow lift which comes in handy in rough water. Do you have water pressure and temp gauges? If so, mount the motor
as high as it will go. I run a 10" set back on mine raised about 95% up on the jackplate and 100% up on the motor mount hole pattern. If not be careful raising the motor. Trimmed all the way out Temp creeps up to alarm then I have to trim in and cool out for a few. Next summer low water pick ups will end that problem. I can just about spin a 27" with my 200, so I would think you would have no problem with the smaller hull. Good luck:cheers

Wow, after all that will i be able to hold the boat in the water? :D Looks like i need to add water pressure and temperture gauges. Will the transom hold the motor and a 12" jack plate?

What can of speed are you getting with that setup?
 
Just me and 1/4 tank of gas I get 74
My motor is 1o" back with no problems, and I run in big water.
I would suggest adding some Stainless steel transom supports to be safe.

The transom is always a big question. If it's dry, then you're OK to go even further back. If it's wet, or you run in big water, you will crack it.
 
I finally got a chance to take the mate out today. Man oh Man this boat is fun to drive. :D I went to the river today a bit windy but not bad. Got on some long straight aways to stretch her out.

At 60 mph it chime walked a bit then straighten out, 70 got a little tricky and 75 mph i had to hold on. I still had some more throttle left but with it being windy i back out of the throttle. The mph was on the speedo so the mph is probably off. I've got to borrow/get a handheld GPS. This was me and 1/2 tank of gas.

I've got some play in the steering i need to tighten up, also the motor is bolted in the third hole down from the top (total of 5 holes). I probably need to raise the motor some more. All in all not bad for the first time out.

Do you have any closeup pictures of your motor setup with the 10" jackplate?
