Simple prop advice??

Looks like this is always a hot topic on this forum!;) Can the knowledgable possibly rec. a prop for my set-up? I'm about to buy a 21' 1987 Starflite with a 200hp Evinrude XP motor. The engine appears stock all the way around, including the lower unit. There is a jackplate but there is really not much set-back other than what the jackplate provides ( 4"??). Here's the deal... This isn't quite the boat i want. I'll eventually be looking for a similar mate with an open bow and a bit more motor, but for now this will suffice. So i don't want to go crazy with mods or setback, or anything that will cost a ton of $$$. I'd like a prop with good all around characteristics, but perhaps a lean towards speed as opposed to hole shots. But like my old Stream V-king, i don't want to have the passengers lean over the deck to help bring the boat up on plane :irked: . Can anyone rec. a prop to get me in the ball park? I don't want to keep swapping props to find the perfect one, i'll be happy with something close. BTW, what am i looking for as far as the hub/spline on this motor? Is there a special type? Or are they common with other motors. Thanks in advance!!

Winter...

Speed with good everything else... I'm thinking it's an OMC RAKER 22p or 24p... good holeshot and excellent top end. Also carries the weight and trim well and seem to the plan for that OMC motor.

If you want an awesome high-efficency and all-around cruising prop, try an OMC Renegade Offshore or Cyclone series 4-blade... I run a 21p on my 26' cat deck boat (225HO ficht) at nearly 60mph.

Powertech 25" TRO4 will do it all.
A lifting prop is a must. Other choices; OMC hubbed Trophy or Tempest; Raker or a Renegade Bass (will have better lift than Renegade Offshore).

Thanks for the replies! Good info there, but i'm wondering what, if any, difference there is in the hub for this lower unit, compared to the common merc shaft. Also, is there any worry about the diameter? No ones mentioned that. Thanks boatman, i look forward to hearing from you.

A Merc prop will not fit your motor unless it is hubbed to fit OMC. Not a problem if you go with the right flo-torq hub. The Raker and Renegade are hubbed for your motor already. The 4 blades are small hub, the 3 blades are large. Both will fit. The Starflite with a small block V6 like yours runs better with a smaller prop.
Find yourself a TRO4 hubbed for OMC and your search is over.

Hey Winter, How about a new TurningPoint 4 blade 25"? They have been tested against the other 4 blades and from what I am hearing, it out performs them. This prop has been nearly 3 years in the making. Intro price, $350+shipping. boatman

Ahhh!!! Too many options! :eyecrazy: :) LOL!! boatman, i'll keep this info handy, as i still need to have it checked out by the dealer first. I'll hopefully at least have this running by tomorrow, in order to save $$$ so the dealer doesn't have to take the time. Thanks again everyone!!

NEED PROP! Dealer called today and said other than a water pump and t-stats, the rig looks decent. So, what prop do i need? To be honest i don't want to spend allot as this boat will likely be for sale in a year, or until i find the boat i'm really looking for. Boatman, what do you have laying around? PM me.

Here's what I would do. 25" Renegade $200 shipped. It will be a very good prop on your setup.

It includes blow out ring and thrust washer. (The Renegade must use the specified thrust washer and they are pricey.) It's a good buy and you might even get it for less. He's sold his boat.

Wow, not a bad price! I sent him email. Do you think the specs are right on it for my application? Thanks again Mark!

I'm not sure you sure if you got your answer regarding which props fit your OMC in all of that great advice. That XP of yours has the unique issue of propshaft splines which are cut differently than the Mercs or a Yamaha. As a result you can switch back and forth props on a 1" shaft props from a Merc and a Yamaha between each other but not an OMC. At least not without cutting the splines on the prop or changing the hubs. There is a distinct difference. But you obviously recognize there is no prop that is a " silver bullet" cure-all. Take the experience this board offers and a few props head to the lake.

Thanks, that will def. help my search. So essentially, as long as it says OMC hub, or something along those lines, i can assume it will fit this shaft? BTW, that Renegade was sold over in BBC. Oh well, searching on!

Exactly...Any OMC V6 prop will fit. Actually any V4 OMC prop will fit too but now this just muddy's the water. Just make sure the diameter and pitch are in the range/size that fits your V6. The diameter is usually somewhere around 14" or so for a V6.

Assuming your motor is still putting out 200 HP, the 25" Renegade is the way to go on a budget. They sell used for less than a Trophy and are always hubbed OMC. Put an ad on BBC, 'WTB 25" Renegade with thrust washer' and you will get a bunch offers. You probably won't need the blowout ring. I don't need one on mine. I really like the TRO4 on my rig but the Renegade is great also and I keep it as a backup. Great holeshot, handling and mid-range exceleration. Far better than any 3 blade.
