I am just wondering if anyone has actually gone past 60 gps in one of these hulls and would like to no what there set up was. I here alot of should go this fast and different stuff like that and am wondering if anybody out there has actually gotten one of these really going and what there set up is. I guess there is alot of talk and I just want to know if this hull can be tamed or are they just a witch over 60 no matter what I do. So any body who has honestly done any kind of speed with one of these your feed back would be greatly appreciated

I dont know if he has an official gps # yet but, Enticer1 has a tweaked 200 Merc on a Sportfire with 8" setback and a 28P Chopper. I am sure he is running well over 70mph At least.

I am sure he will post as soon as he see's this thread. Very nice boat.

I AM SPINNING BOTH MY 27 AND MY 24 ENOUGH TO PEG MY 6000 RPM TACH STILL SPENDING MY MONEY ON GAS CAN'T BUY A GPS BUT ANY WAY I PUT IT IN THE PROP CALC I AM BREAKING 60
I AM RUNNING A 150 XRI WITH A 175 ECM A CMC 6 INCH JACKPLATE PROPSHAFT IS AROUND TWO AND A HALVE TO 1 AND A HAJVE INCHES BELOW PAD
I ONLY HAVE THREE PROPS
FIRST IS A 21P HIGH FIVE CAN SPIN IT TO THE MOON VERY LITTLE CHINE WALK
SECOND IS A 24P TROPHEY HAS LOTS OF BOW LIFT THINGS START GETTING DICEY FROM 5400 RPM ON
THIRD IS A 27P YAMMI DRAG COPY LOVE THIS PROP BUT TOPEND IS A HANDFULL TO SAY THE LEAST
OH YEH FORGOT TO MENTION I AM DOING THIS WITH A SINGLE CABLE STEERING
SO WHAT IS YOUR SET UP
ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS IT TAKES SEAT TIME I HAVE OWNED MY DIP FOR 5 YEARS NOW AND CAN BOAT 9 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR WITH OUR WEATHER
GOODLUCK MAN:bigthumb:

Ditch the single cable steering system before you run the boat again! You are asking for trouble if you go any faster with a single cable. I wouldn't ride in it at 60 like that. Just some friendly advice. boatman:cheers

YEAH I KNOW JUST CAN'T AFFORD IT RIGHT NOW BUT IT IS A NEW TELEFLEX NO FEED BACK ATLEAST AND I ONLY AIR IT OUT WHEN I AM THE ONLY ONE IN THE BOAT SO IF I LOOSE IT IT IS ONLY MY ARSE I AM BUSTIN UP

mine's an 88 i/o so hull may be a little different and boat's a good bit heavier. Depending on prop, I'm in low to mid 70's and have had lieelt or not problems with stability. I've run a mirage and a hydromotive quad iv at these speeds with little or no problem. Mirage needs more trim to hit top and feels more like it's hunting around on the back edge of the hull, hydromotive seemed stable as a rock. Hope this is helpful.

Handful for Sure

Tom, I agree with " Laplant " 100 percent. Top end gets a tad stressful and I have ruined more than one pair of perfectly good underwear when the chine walk gets outta hand. (LOL) When I had the 135 on the Sportfire Mike (83Predictor) clocked me at 54 and thats probably all it would do. Now with the 200 its a whole new ballgame and learning experience. My 200 was previously on a Hydro-Stream Vegas that the owner claimed would run 78+. Since the Vegas was a 20 ft boat and a bit heavier than either a Diplomat or a Sportfire I expect 70+ mph is possible. That being said remember Hydro-Streams, Actions, ect. have pads that are twice as wide as the Checkmates and those guys run in the 90's with their hands behind their heads. I have been slowly raising my motor on the plate and right now I'm about 1.5 inches below the pad with the prop-shaft and it has improved the handleing but its still not a cake walk. Right now I only have 1 prop with enough pitch to use on the 200 but I can't complain because it comes outta the hole like a scalded dog and the mid-range punch is incredible. FYI its a 28 Chopper from my Boss's Drag boat. I can bury the 6000 RPM tach with ease and the Vegas owner told me to buy a 7000 RPM tach because I would need it. When I get out with 83Predictor I'll try to get some GPS readings and I'll keep ya posted.

re

THanks Laplant it sound like you have the allmost identical setup asw I have your motor if 175 is the same as my older 200 and jackplater set up is identical, the only difference is that I am RUnning a foot throttle and daul Ride Guide, and a steering wheel mounted trim control (have it have not installed yet). I wuold suggest the foot throttle as you don't have to take your hands off the wheel to slow down when it get's really crazy. It sounds to me like mid to high sixties are attainable as you are allready doing around that it just won't be a smooth ride no matter what I do.

prop choice is critical.
My I/O Diplomat is a completely different boat with the 4 blade Mach Sterndriver than with anyother prop I have tested. Still need way more pitch, but not in the cards right now. My son hit 69.41 on gps with the same prop we pull 2 slalom skiers with
Just got the drive back together, but having shift cable issues so still have not been on the water this year

Dave, what do you need to get back on the water? I've got some spare parts laying around that you could have if you needed them... Not looking for cash, just cleaning up...

SAVING UP FOR A SEA STAR SYSTEM FOR MY STEERING BUT I CAN'T PUT A HOT FOOT IN MY BOAT CUZ MY SUBS ARE MOUNTED UNDER THE DASHES PLUS ITS A GREAT FOREARM WORKOUT TO DRIVE 1 HANDED

need to take it up to the marina and have them replace the lower shift cable....

Went out for a ride this weekend for about half an hour, had my 26 chopper on but by the time I got out there was about a 1 foot chop so did not push past 55 mph. The one bay that I could have goten some flat water in had some idiot doing donuts on a watercraft. Between my wife and baby (7 months old), the choppy conditions, and all the boat traffic are conspiringto make top end runs very difficult. Maybe next weekend.

Hi Tom.
The others advice is pretty much spot on. These boats really werent meant to go that fast, but it is possible just not practical. No matter what, it is going to be tempermental running at those speeds unless like you said, the water is calm. Even then, the smallest wake could send you into a nasty chine walk.
My Sportfire was simmilar to your setup although I had a single cable steering.:shakehead:
1987 Sportfire - Merc 2.0l (Frankenmerc 150) Solid mounts, 6'' setback 1-2'' below the pad. I had a chance to run a few props and I saw the best results w/ a labbed 28p hoss triton. Not sure on speeds but it is safe to say it was 60+mph.

That seems to be what I have figured out that mid 60s is as fast as I want to push for. I was figuring out that with the 28p triton even at 5500 you would have to be pushing the high 60s unless you were getting all kinds of sip, witch I doubt with a prop that steep.

I have an '84 Diplomat with a 140 Evinrude on it. I have it running pretty good after a lot of on line reading and learning. I have picked up plenty from this board through my searches.
It isn't quite as fast as I had hoped. I have always had my 23 yo step son and my 70 pound dog with me. I still carry quite a few tools with me too, it has never stranded me but I used to use the tools quite often.

At 5600 RPMs with a 3 blade 12-3/4" 21" prop I get 51 mph on GPS. I tried a 13-3/8" 17" prop to do some tubing. Both were new teflon coated SS props. I dropped down to 46 mph. The trade off was worth it though with the improved torque. I seem to be able to find much better luck cruising moderately, mid range RPMs. The 21 didn't seem to want to do much more than go fast. The motor is running better than before which could have some affect but the change was noticeable right away and I didn't want to go back.
What I am wondering is if I can try the 4 blade 13 1/4" 25" OMC Shooter prop that I have (I have it for an '89 Johnson 200 HP that I want to try on the 17 foot 'Dip.). Would this be over propping my 140 and break my little 'Rude?
I-Boats shows a 4 blade 13 1/4" 22" Stiletto for a 1983 140 hp.

I don't think you would hurt the motor as it will just not pull and you will not get anywhere near the rpms if it is too much prop. I sounds like it might be too much prop and I would look too find somebody who has one to try before putting out the cash. I am very fortunate a retired teacher thyat taught me in high school has all sizes from 22 to pitch merc choppers all cupped and massaged to try, and he is an expert driver if I do not have the balls to really push it in testing said props. THis is a real bonus with props cossting a fortune.

the older crosscharged 1.6l 140's need the smaller dia props, you are at 8 percent slip with the 21 which is great, but too much pitch for your application without a jack plate...how much trim are you using to get top end? without a jackplate, the pad keel requires a lot of trim to make it really fly.....
you can really feel the hull lighten up as the trim goes up!
I think you might be happy with a turbo 19 X 12 3/4

I got the boat last October and I have not moved the motor from the position it was mounted in. The mounting bolts are in the top holes on the brackets. I have been planning to try moving it up and see what that does. I didn't plan on putting my jack plate on until this winter. The season can be short and end suddenly here in South Dakota.

You are right, I need to have it trimmed way up to really take off. You can definitely feel when it gets going. I have about 3 other props at a friends farm. I am almost sure I have a 19" one but I believe they are all the larger diameter. I think I am going to try moving it all the way up tomorrow and try the 21 again. It is supposed to get windy early afternoon and stay for the weekend. The lake will be very busy also. These things will make the water too rough to open up a small boat for very long.

Thanks for the information, I'll let you know how it turns out when I get some fairly good water to toy with.
