SS Propeller Repair

Gromet

Member
Anyone have any experience or opinions regarding Stainless Steel Propeller Repairs? As you might guess, I'm in the need of some and I have found several places that claim to repair, balance and shine to a pre-damaged look. I've had experience with alluminum props probably 20 years ago, but didn't know if the same rules apply to SS.

you won't have any problems, i had lots rebuilt without any issues. as long as there is 2/3 of the blade remaining it can be rebuilt. make sure you check the propshaft, if you've hit something with a stainless prop you've also done other damage - the metal is a lot harder than other components in the drive.

Thanks for the reply. The shaft appears to be OK - the collision was at idle and simply bounced off a couple rocks. :brickwall:

I was able to put my old 23 Pitch back on and confirm no vibration etc.

Many times after a rebuild prop may run better than straight from the box. Many props are known to be NOT perfect out of the box. After rebuild most prop shops will repitch all blades and check for balance. Now would be the perfect time to make any adjustments to dial in your prop.

I had nothing but bad results from prop rebuilds in the '80's so I gave up on them. Now days, there's several good rebuild shops available that can make your prop better than new.

Howdy.

I run a prop sales & repair shop here on Table Rock Lake just outside Branson Missouri. The Prop Doctor.

Depending on the damage, your prop may or may not look as good as before. In some cases it will not run exactly as it did when new which can be good or bad.

When a prop is ground, sanded, & polished on the trailing edge cup is usually affected. The cup is a very important part of what makes the prop perform.
