Starflite all around prop?

Ok I have an 87 Starflite with an old 89 200 merc. Currently I am running with a Chopper Big ear 24P prop and no setback. The current setup gets 59.5mph at 5900 RPM on the GPS. And the motor is to about 3" below the V.

So.. the problem I have with this setup is that it is ok for speed but terrible getting out of the hole and to plane off. If I have 4 people in the boat the prop slips so bad and the people in the back often have to move up front for me to plane off. Sometime I get lucky and hit a wave that will pop me on plane. But if it is calm out it will not plane off with more than 2 people in the boat. Also the damn thing pulls so hard to the right when it is trimmed up. And god forbid you want to actually go to the left when under power and over 40 mph.

I have yet to check my foam to see if it is soaked but I would figure it would actually help me plane off if it were.

What it comes down to is I would like to find a prop that would maintain or increase the current speed I do have and also help me get out of the hole and maybe pull a wakeboard or tube if i want to. Because right now it would be impossible.

I know this hull needs setback to go fast but I am not worried about that right now this late in the season. Plus I'm not that worried about going too fast as this is my first boat and I am still learning.

Thanks,
Kevin

my starflight had a 89 MOD 2.4 200 before i got it... it ran a 23 tophy small hub....62 mph..gps & had a good hole shot... i still run the same prop with my 225 pro max.... 70 plus MPH..& excellent hole shot.... kurt

On my Starflite I have a 200 Black Max bolted to a 5.5 inch manual jack plate. I am running a 24 pitch Turbo prop and can still plane with 5 adults in the boat. The holeshot is not great but I can still pull a tube or knee board with no problem. I just ordered a Hoss Triton II last week. It should give me a better holeshot and maybe a touch more on the top end. I'll let everyone know how it works out when it comes in.

23" or 24" Trophy depending on how strong your engine is. I run a 25" but have a strong 2.5L EFI...it launches out of the hole. Stick with a small hub 4 blade if you want best all round performance.

Tnanks guys for the advice.

I figured I wouldn't go any lower then 24" since that is what my current prop is. But when it comes to 4 blades would a 24" 4 blade run much lower RPM than a chopper 3 blade? I'm already at 5900 and really don't want to scream it much higher than that.

I've also read some older threads on the Power Tech PRO4 was a good choice and being better than a trophy plus. Is there any truth to this?

You can run a TRO4 higher than the Trophy. But they are stiffer in pitch...a 23" will run like a 24" Trophy. W/O a JP there is no advantage for you since you are plenty high now.

I have the same boat, but with a 200hp Evinrude. I have the same problem with a 24p generic ss prop, though i am seeing 64mph on the GPS with a light load. In my quest for the perfect prop (before i decided i need to sell this Flite in search of a Starliner), Choppers never came as recommended. TRO4 was what seemed to be the best answer, but of course a good deal of setback is needed for the best of both worlds.

Havent been on latey, but i was running a 225 yamaha (1987) last year on my starflite 25p trophy plus at 6150rpm to the tune of 74.3 with 12 inches of setback. I had to get a new motor and am changing some things as we speak in search of the elusive 80mph. I tried allot props nothing carried teh bow like the trophy plus. Aaron

Hey Aaron how's your rig comming along? Im still messing with my setup too, slowly....hehehe

Yeah I'm currently on the hunt for a 24p trophy plus thanks to all the suggestions! I went out yesterday with 5 people including me and I could just barely get on plane after about 5-6 seconds of cavitation.

But I have to say besides all the problems I am having with this prop it is still the most fun I have ever had in any boat. Everybody loves it and I get compliments left and right. It even grabs the attention of guys in much larger boats. It was also really rough yesterday at some spots and it handled it like a champ.

When I get the new prop I'll report on how it goes.

I'm in the same boat (hahahah) with props on my Starflite. Currently has a 4-blade Shooter prop - PO said it was 29P but I'm not sure. Takes FOREVER to plane...I think it would rather just sit and cavitate. Johnson 220HP V6 with 5" jackplate.

Anxious to hear more updates.

Well I ordered two props as my friends baja needed more pitch. I got a used 24p Trophy plus and a new PT TRO4 24p. We got 5 more MPH on the baja as he was running a 3 blade 21P no name ss prop.

So I stuck the TRO4 on the starflite and went out for a run. And all I have to say is I LOVE this prop. It shoots out of the hole like nothing I've seen before. I didn't gain any speed but I can still run 58 mph with less trim than the chopper. I do notice my RPMs are a bit lower than the chopper. And man is it easier to drive. I can actually turn left under power now. And I can't get this thing to cavitate no matter what I try.

I will try the trophy on my boat this weekend and see the difference between the two props. I expect to get my RPMs up a bit as everyone says the 24p TRO4s run more like a 25.
