start up problems

i finally got my motor ready to fire but it seems like its just not getting enough juice to get a good rotation. its a 78 235 evinrude. the wierd thing is that i had a battery with a full charge in it. plus when i took this battery out my dad put it in his boat and it started his 305 sb in his 25' chris craft. however that does have two batteries and i think the one that i had was kind of old. so the way im thinking right now is that i need a new battery and that should give it enough power to turn over with a good rotation. if anyone else has encountered a similar problem and has found the solution for it i would very much appreciate the advise. so anyone with any helpfull info please lend me your wisdom. thank you and hope to hear from someone soon.

do a load test on the battery, that will tell you if its junk right away, most car shops or marinas have load testers you can try

Advance Auto Parts...

AAP will do a charge/load test on a battery for free. I bought a red top Optima battery last year from them and I couldn't get it to hold a charge this year. They tested it and swapped it out under warranty, I asked him if he had checked it on the computer and he said "no, I remember you buying it here.

They'll get my business for a while longer. The new red top Optima has worked like a charm so far.

Topher...

If you were asking about the Optima battery I think I spent about $150 for it. The Optima's are supposed to take vibration better as they are a fiberglass mesh "six pack" battery. I usually believe that when something fails that I probably had something to do with it so I installed a single pole Perko battery rotary disconnect switch inside my rear seat box. The first battery may have failed by just having the engine/tilt/trim juice loading on it when I was driving up to the lake. I only switched the main engine cable, the stereo and other accessories are still on all the time. I do remove the battery from the boat when I am not using it and slap a quick charge on it when I go out. I also like having a spare battery in the garage, my 2002 truck still has the original battery and I keep waiting for the day it gives up.

Later on...

boat batteries because of the intermittent use they get, last about 5 years before they are junk. i've gotten 10 years out of some by charging them once a month over the winter. i've also switched from 550 mca batteries to 1000 mca (mercury suggestion on all optimax and efi engines) seems to work ok.
