Steering Setup?

Moe

Member
17ft Trimate with a 1500 v-6. I broke the steering cable this weekend and was wonder if there was a better setup to go with? I thought that it was a pretty shitty setup. it was a rack system, but you couldn't slide it apart at the motor, I had to cut it in order to get it off, there wasn't enough room on the side of the motor between the hull and motor. it also seemed like it was forced into the motor due to placement of the hole on the hull. anybody have any ideas what i can do? I was considering making my own offset bracket with a different hole and keeping the rack system. any thoughts? the boats too fast to have a chinsey setup, and i dont want one either.

Often times you have to unbolt the motor from the boat to change the steering cables. With the motor hanging from the lifting eye you should never have to force the cable in. If you are replacing it I would recommend a dual cable rack system or hydraulic. Hydraulic is way more $$$ but is nice.

Either system is better than a single cable set up.

Sorry if this is too basic, but if you go to a double cable system, it will work better if you run a cable down each side of the hull.

The only reason for the play with a single cable is the cable has two bends in the same direction. When turned one way, the cable pulls against the inside of the housing, and when turned the other way, it is forced to the outside of the housing, creating play.

When the cables are both sides, this effect gets cancelled out.

I had a 16' Laser w/200 Evinrude (jack plate, foot throttle, steering trim, nose cose, 31" cleaver prop) that radared at 87 mph. I had dual cable on it, and it performed safely.

Having said that, hydraulic is better.

Actually, the play on a single cable system is because of the "play" in the rack and pinion (gear mesh)and the clearance between the sheath and cable. With a dual cable system, you adjust the play out of it, or at least to a minimum, by creating tension in the system. The elimination, or serious reduction, of steering play, will help reduce chine walking. Of course for anything over 60MPH I would recommend solid motor mounts as well. The dual cables give you a safety factor if one does break as well.

With a cable down each side, called "dual opposed" it is theoretically the best of a dual cable system. Allison's come standard with that. Depending on the year of your motor (when you say 1500V6 I'm assuming about 1977) this may not be an option due to the lack of availability of an attaching kit.

Personaly, for your application, considering price and effectiveness, I would go dual cable rack down the same side of the boat.

One other thing to consider is if you are looking at adding a jackplate you may want to change where the cables exit the well and the length of the cables. If you are not 100% sure take the boat to a reputable dealer for their opinion, and order the parts from them if you are going to install yourself. He should be able to make sure you get the right stuff.

Where would I find a dual cable rack system? I looked through boaters world and couldn't find one. How much would one run? I have been looking into jackplates, where is the best place to get them? and what is the best to use a hydraulic or manual?

go witrha dual no feedback system and set it up so that there is no play in it and put solid mounts in your motor. I'll send you a link for the system later this evening.

I went with the teleflex NFB duel cable system on my trimate. I ordered the cables a bit longer because of the jack plate. When I installed the steering system so I could trailer the boat during my relocation I ran the cables throught the factory hole in the transom. I am thinking of filling the hole in and running the cables a bit differant. The problem you are going to have (same as mine only mine is a V6) is going to be mounting the 2nd cable to the clamp bracket. I am going to have to get creative on th emounting system. It can be done, its just going to have to be fabercated.

Moe,

If you go dual cble you are going to need the dual steering attaching kit. What year is your motor? If it is a late 70's version you are going to need the proper attaching kit. I believe that one had two arms and is different than anything 1980 and newer.

I would work with a local dealer. It may cost you a little more but if you buy the wrong thing and send it back it starts costing you$$$$.

Pay now, or pay later.

esive... why NOT rickracers???

They have been excellent in the past, plus we FORUM MEMBERS (checkmate-boats.com) get a discount of 10-20% off the internet posted prices.

The last couple times I have ordered from them it took a long time to get the order. Very nice people and I did get what I ordered, but it was a long wait. Maybe just an isolated case I don't know. I do plan to order a couple other things this winter from them. We will see how that goes.

Jrumon,

Why not Rickracer?

For the boards sake lets just leave it as a bad experience. Similar to jkeiper's comments, and then some.

I have found better places to deal with.

RickRacer

I ordered a few things from them and although my credit card was charged I didn't receive the items. I tried to contact them a number of times to get the status but no reply!
It has been 3 months, I waited long enough.
