Suggestion box...

Senator holland, I think all of us chose Checkmate for the Quality, but what do you think the reason is that Baja out numbers Checkmate by at least 10 to 1? Brunswick corp. markets the hell out of them and there are dealers all over.

How often do you see a Checkmate add in your boating magazines and on other websites. Not to often and Baja is the boat I've seen the most of!

Its also the closest hi-po dealer around here!!!!!!!!!

Guys, all I can say is I honestly love my boat. The thing is over 10 years old, the interior isn't mint, but it is an awesome ride.

I know what ya' mean Chris, My Diplomat was an '85. Awesome inside and out, just too small for the river. I sure miss that boat!

Bill,

I think we are both on the same page, just didn't seem like it at first.

Here's my opinion about Checkmate's marketing attitude. I don't think they really want to produce the numbers that Baja does. Then they would have to change the way they make their boats. I think they like their business they way it is now.

As far as extras go I agree with you there too, but I think they'll keep getting better and better.

Re: waves in the glasswork, my opinion is Checkmate is still better. You have to compare apples to apples, though. You have to compare bubble boats to bubble boats and hard-line boats to hard-line boats. For a hand-laid hull with hard-lines and built-in, crafted-in designs into the hull and deck, Checkmate has always been known as one of the best with minimal irregularities. It's even been stated in several reviews though the years in boat magazines. And many times, they have less irregularities than bubble boats.

I never should have mentioned the "B" word because they really aren't in the same category. Although they may provide more "extras" and such, and are a great boat, in my opinion are a category below.

I think we should all get back to talking, speed, props, set-up, what we did last weekend in our Mates. Every once and awhile we have to talk about the competition, though. It's been a great topic.

Right on Craig!

Guys, the reality is, Mate will bend over backwards to create your dream boat. I'm pretty sure if you wanted cockpit lights or some of the extras you have mentioned, they would gladly put them in for you upon request.

Nobody said they would not Chris, I am suggesting they include more immentities as options or standard equipment. I have stuff on my boat that they installed for me that is not an option, but the more you start adding that is out of their norm, the more likely a mistake is going to be made. I do not just mean Checkmate now, I mean you add too much to everyones normal routine and mistakes will be made.

Also Chris, you are sort of wrong, there were a clouple of minor things that I asked for that they said no to, told me to do it myself. So I did, among many other things. Some things, such as courtesy light is more simple is easier to do when the boat is apart. but again Chris, they can only do so much "extra" Still Chris, just a suggestion box, to help Checkamte, like so many other manufacturers do.

You are absolutly right Chris, it would drive up the price if they were standard, but they could be options like the light for the cuddies or the engine compartment. Some of my other suggestions are very simple and would not cost anymore, but other could only be implememted if they redigned they deck. But it helps put ideas in their heads for what they might want to add to improve designs when the time comes. I guess I just spent to much time in the business and getting to see multiple factories and brands and being able to talk with engineers and reps and them asking what to do to improve since my job was to listen to what the customers would like to see changed. So... I guess I will just keep quiet from now on on this topic since it is still upsetting some.

i think it would help if checkmate would make two serie's a family boat and a racing one..
i find the two serie's to close to their prospect buyers..
so make zt= racing and the convincors is family...

like that idea??

Just thought I would add my opinion about Checkmates. I have been boating for about 25 years on Kentucky Lake, started out with a 16' Hydrosport with a Merc 125hp outboard and have owned my 253 for 6 years now. At our gathering place on our lake, 90% of the boats are Baja and Sea Ray. I traveled 350 miles to buy either a Formula or a Checkmate, decided on the mate due to the increased price of the Formula. I'm not really into speed (I'm not a mechanic) but my boat runs a solid upper 50s, but the thing I like about my Checkmate is the quality. You can set at our rock quarry all day and see the Bajas come and go and nobody really notices them, but let one of the few Checkmates (Evan's or mine) come around and everybody notices them. In 6 years, my only complaint is the door to the cuddy comes off the track, but I keep the door snapped open so it doesn't matter. You can put a Checkmate next to the Bajas and the Mate looks so much better. Maybe the reason there are more Bajas has something to do with the cheaper price. Just my opinion... Later

Herb Martin

Herb,

That is another thing I wanted to say: If the market ever became flooded with Checkamtes, they would lose their appeal and become just one of the same. I wouldn't want one if everyone else had one.
