suggestions on interior resto?

hello everyone. i have recently picked up a 76 trimate III. the hull is in good condition along with the paint.it has a 235 hp evinrude that hasn't been started in about 8 years. at least thats what i was told by the previous owner. however, i threw a new battery in it and it cranks over but i need to get the motor flush to hook up to my hose to fire it up. the inside of the boat is basically gone. but i have the driver and passenger seats. the others i was going to custom make. i would love to have this boat in the water by labor day. if you have any suggestions or ideas to help me out with the interior of the boat please let me know. thanks

Well Hello back at ya topher312 & :welcome:

I know nothing about your interior but I do know you should not turn that rig over without water that's a no no. Impeller don't like that.

Get your lower unit serviced along with all fuel related items plus plugs & so on so on. Take her to a good tech if you can or your in for on the job training.
Probably not the best idea if your in a hurry.

All those years sitting up she needs TLC
Hopefully the guys will be along that know your boat.

Good Luck :bigthumb:

Hey don't sweat that impeller now being that old it needs to be replaced anyway.

thats what the motor flush is for. it hooks up to your backyard hose and clamps onto the lower unit of the out board. and beleive it or not my dad is an OMC mechanic so the motor isn't a big issue at all.

Then your way ahead of the game then aren't ya.

I understand what the flush rig is used for. You said you cranked over the engine & didn't have the flush tool yet & said nothing about your dad being a tech. I was just trying to help prevent a problem for you.

I was taught when I was your age Never turn over a dry impeller .

Maybe it's not a big deal I just don't do it.

Good Luck with your interior

sorry if that last one sounded a little snobbish. i meant no disrespect by it. it was just a half a second to see if it would turn. and like you said i should probably replace it. how much would you say that new impellers run for? and also. the guy that i bought the boat from gave me two props. one is a 19 pitch and the other is a 21. which one do you think is better for more all around use?

Hey topher312, That mess isn't your fault,I sometimes get carried away.Let's call it water under the bridge.

First thing is to get this thread back to the top, so maybe the right guy will read & respond.

Second I'll help you search around the site. There might be some info here that'll help your case.I know there are some Trimate's here.

I don't recall any prices on the impeller kits & wasn't that long ago either :shakehead:

The props, I'd be guessing on that one.

Your custom interior idea might be the only way to go . I've been told that the factory templates & patterns only go back to the 80's. Maybe they didn't change that much. I know some of the guy's have ordered interior's from the Checkmate factory.

Also get your dad a lawn chair & iced tea & make him let you do the work on that beast . You'll learn alot more that way.

Good Luck:thumb:

thanks a lot. thats mainly why i took on this project. my dad told me that he would help me but he's not going to do it for me. which i completely understand. its also going to be nice to know how to work on what i have on my own. i'm really looking forward to the experience. thaks again. hope to talk to you some time soon

I can't speak directly about Outboard impellers, but I did just by one for my I/O and the impeller alone was about $23. If you buy the whole kit (gaskets, housing, etc.) you should still be able to get it for around $50. My Mate is a 1980, and I had to get the interior custom made by an upholstery shop. Mike at Checkmate couldn't go back that far to send me factory stuff. It's worth calling them to check, but beyond 85 it's hit or miss. Good luck with the project!

thanks jamey. how much did your interior run you from an upholstry shop?did you make all the tamplates first? were you happy with the quality?

The guy did a great job. I doubt it's much use to you where you live, but I give plugs where they are due. It was Hill's upholstery in Centerpoint, AL. I took the old bench seat, side panels and cup holders to him and he remade them with 3/4" marine plywood. I couldn't match the charcoal and blue striping in the seats exactly with his samples, so he unstitched the original seats and resewed them in with the new material. He gave me enough scrap marine plywood and material to redo the hood cushions myself. Everything fit perfectly when I got it back ... and I spent a little less than $1,000 total.

wow. it sounds like your guy did a great job. and i had expected it to be way more then a grand.but thatnks for the heads up for when i get mine done. now i know about the price range that i should be in when i go to have my interior redone.

I have a 76 Trimate 11 with a 78 115 jhonson. When I bought it I was running a 21 pitch cast prop. It done pretty good @ high speeds but not on take off. I put a 19 pitch staineless and now it leaps out on take off but it did slow down my top speed but not very considerably. So it just depends on what your looking. I for one would go with a 19 "less drag on your ingine".
