support for a jackplate?

After talking about it for 2 yrs I finally got my jackplate and it is going to be installed in a week or so! My transom seems solid but do you think I should do anything else at install? I have a 88 spectra and bought a manual TH marine plate. My local marina is installing it for me. I sure hope the cable's for the steering, gas and oil are long enough! thanks

CMC Plate

I just installed a new CMC plate last friday on my 1980 Enticer. I didn't find any nasty surprises with the transom, all it took was a cum-a-long and a handy oak tree. I just cleaned up the factory plate and the CMC jack-plate bolted right up. I used a washer plate on the upper bolts but had to modify it to clear the drain in the splash well. The whole job took me about 4 hours and that included removing and replacing the gas tank. At this time I still have single Teleflex steering and it certinly had to "flex" when I moved it back. It seems to be OK but I think that I will go with hydrolic as soon as $$ allows. I don't plan on removing the jack-plate anytime soon so I used 5200 to seal everything up.

Doug (Enticer1):cheers

Hey Doug, I know it's to late now but, that 5200 is adhesive sealant . It will pull the Gelcoat off the Boat when you remove the Plate. No big deal though. It's not hard to fix & besides you don't plan on going there any time soon anyway.

Doug, I'm getting old . It seems by reading your post more thoughly you are aware of what you used. I think other readers of this thread should be aware also though.

Hey Shaun
When are you going to post the pics of your restore?
If the transom is dry, check the holes when you pull the motor, then you shouldn't need any extra support. Those transoms are very strong if they have not been compromised by water. You should have an aluminum factory transom plate under your motor now. That should be all you need for a 6" JP.

Mark, I will post pics as soon as I get the boat back and put the new decal's on! which should be shortly! and yes it does have the factory plate on! thanks I was going to post pic's but the ones I took were in the garage and did not turn out good!thanks

Hi Petersfield,
Like Mark said, If your transom is dry it should be okay. Checkmates have good transom strength from what Ive seen. There is going to be alot more stress on the transom especially if the motor is high so its not a bad idea to brace it. Over time it could cause spider cracks in the splashwell but nothing too serious.
IllMATTic braced his with some metal bars. I think there are some photos in his predictor resto thread. Goodluck

I was driving by where my boat is and stopped in to see how they were making out ! and I was surprised they were done! It looks awsome and my cables were long enough which I was worried about. I now just got to figure out how to set it up properly? It is set all the way down and now I can just raise as I need. I will get my new decals next week or so and then I will post pic's. Gelcoat also looked incredible pulling up to it I have not seen it since fall! thanks
