Suzuki Outboards-General opinions?

I have my eye on a late 90's 2.7L Fuel Injected Suzuki (2 stroke.)
Does anybody have any general opinions about these motors? I know nothing about them, but the price on this one might be right.
Finding info on these over the internet has turned out to be a frustrating enterprise!
Any sources of technical information or even baseless opinions will be very much appreciated :)

what specifically are you interested in knowing? my bro-in-law works for suzuki canada. i don't know anything about the 2 strokes - but the 4 strokes are great engines. send me a pm and i'll pass it along to him.

I didn't have any specific questions. I was just wondering about reliability, power, fuel economy, easy/hard to work on, availability of parts, potential upgrades...basically anything anybody might know about these motors before I make an investment in one.

I did learn that they are almost 500lbs!!!! The 2-strokes weigh as much as the 4 strokes of the same power!
It seemed to me that 2.7 liters is a lot of motor to be producing 'only' 150hp. Probably just an ECU change (or something similar) to turn it into a 200hp.

Nope that's not that bad. Yamaha has built a 2- stroke 150 /175 hp for years that is 2.7 litre/liter and it is the same displacement.

Suzuki DOES/did build a VERY reliable 2-stroke. They just don't seem to have the same following and dealer network that's all.

Now of course they have jumped on the 4-stroke bandwagon. I personally think they should have hitched a few of their horses ( Like Yamaha did) to the 2-stroke market. Not everybody thinks ( and knows) that 4-strokes are the answer.

i was with you 100%, until i drove my first suzuki 4 stroke - a 150 on a smokercraft deckboat. pulled a solid 52 mph - i was mildly impressed until i found out it was a 4 cylinder - then i was very impressed (i thought it was a V6)- great motors. since then i've driven their 175, 200, 225, and 250.

you are right - they don't have the dealer network that the other guys do, and i remember very well an issue a guy i went to school with had in getting lower unit parts in the early 90's - took 3 months for a set of gears to arrive from japan. they also supplied all the 4 strokes to brp under the "johnson" name a few years ago.b

my .02 cents

Down south we have Suzuki Dealers and the guys I used to fish with in bass tournaments ran the 2-stroke 150 and 225hp motors. The motors were reliable and never in the shop, that was over ten years ago.

I bought a Suzuki.
Here is the rundown.
2003 2.7L EFI, 25" shaft.
No prop or controls.
THe 25" shaft is an issue, because my tri-mate is a 20" (of course), but i already have a manual jack plate, so I hope I can get it high enough.

It has a bad lower...hit a stump.

It's from Wisconsin. Good thing about that is no corrosion. In the pictures it looked like a new motor, except for a broken skeg (again from the stump.) Bad thing is that I couldn't see it first hand, as I am in Florida. Bought it on EBAY from a marina with a good rating, however. So I hope it will turn out as good as it looks. They said all was in excellent condition except the lower.

$1000 plus freight (a few hundred more.)

Considering how new it is, I think I got a good deal. However I am still going to need to source a lower, prop and controls. Props and controls are all over EBAY for cheap (due to low demand for Suzuki parts, I reckon.)
But the lower may be a bit more of a challenge.
My challenge is to get this thing put together for under $2000, and then I think I'll have a screamin' good deal.

well I have friend who recently bought a 2001 225 2 stroke, just had had the power head replaced by a dealer and engine was still there, they rigged the boat, did nice job, we ran the boat about 10 hours, lost power, ran some checks, no compression in one cyl. pulled the head, took out a piston....so you decide ??? maybe a bad injector caused it but still dealer did not take care original problem, my thoughts it's just a anchor hanging on the wrong end...Rob

I have a friend that had similar problems when he bought a left-over 2004 225 suzuki outboard back in early 2006 for his 23 ft centerconsole. He had a powerhead replaced @ aprox 50 hours(under warranty). Then again @ aprox. 100 hours, (dealer paid half) & the boat is sitting right now with a blown powerhead. He has almost as much money in attorneys fees, trying to get it fixed, as in buying the motor. The worst part is he took a perfectly good running, loop charged, 225 johnson off the boat becouse he was concerned that it was old & would leave him stranded 30 miles off-shore one day. The suzuki has done it twice!

To clarify, the 1st time they replaced the powerhead, the 2nd time they rebuilt the powerhead, & right now he has the same problems as the previous failures.

i had a suzuki nothing but problems part to costley hard to find ect ect i own a 82 diplomat put a evenrude 120 on it no problems have fun
