Tach wirring for O/B...

My tach is getting replaced ( corroded inside ) and before I get another I needed to see if anyone can help me out with types of tachs? Mine says
"4cyl- 4 stroke / 6cyl- 4 stroke / 8cyl- 4 stroke / and 12 pin alt" on the settings on the back is this the wrong tach for an outboard? I know that if I put my 6cyl merc 200 on the 6 cyl 4 stroke setting it will read twice the rpm's- so is this the wrong tach? or what? what's the 12 pin alt setting mean? Sorry for being WAAAAAY behind you guys! Thanx again to EVERYONE! Dave
