Not to mention the West Systems gallon kit and fiberglass sitting at home waiting for me to get the time to come home and start cutting and cussing:sssh:

You know it's funny, that transom looks so solid in pictures.

The wife is really bummed that the seats are in bad shape, I know I can resurrect the forms. The skins are another story. I am looking for encouragement for the wife that we can simply find a sewing machine and start cutting pieces.

Due to a long work week I wont get much of a chance to hit the boat very hard, other than to inventory the incoming supplies and study the manuals. I'm also making my list for a Harbor Freight trip.

With some luck and a little bit of a$$ busting I should start the weekend Friday morning:thumb:
Hopefully I get a fast rental this week:sssh:

A little inspiration

Last week at one of my customer sights this was their next door neighbor. There was a lot full of gems like these.

It is North River Boats in Roseburg, OR.

If I ever hit the lottery, I know right where to go;)

:irked:Not a bad day all together but I did find that there is a soft spot in the deck. Apparently at some point someone put in a ski pole or were mid process of putting one in and decided it wouldn't work or wasn't worth it. You can just see were the top plate was. The deck is just slightly soft around it but while I'm here I will replace

The wife came up with buying a canopy to work under, the idea just popped right into her mind after I showed her a Harbor Freight flyer with the 10'x20' for $119. ;)

Cutting and Smoking

I'm spending the long weekend cutting away and smoking:D
IMG_20150906_114629406_zpssumwqxwb.jpg

It's amazing, that feeling of relief when you see just how rotten the transom and that all this effort is worth it.

Some more progress

As with anything the further you go, the deeper it gets. We made a lot of progress so far today but discovered a little extra work. Plus a little mystery:confused: The mystery is, what are these blocks for?

There is nothing anchored to them and they are on both sides in the same place. I'm sure in production they aren't just stuck there for practice. Due to where they are located they could be an anchor point for a different seating option? or cable steering never installed? Just curious....

Then the small setback. The wife really wants to r/r the original seats so I took them off the stands and through one of the screw holes I saw a sparkle:( so I cut a access hole:eek:

There was about 3.5 gal in there so once it dries off it comes. The good news though is that the passenger side one is perfect.

The Admiral also really wants to save the flake. There are some stress cracks that would need to be addressed as well as there will be a few holes that I will have to fill/patch. I'm not sure how to tell if this is worth repairing, or how:confused: Not to mention I am using West System epoxy so no using gel coat?

Can this be repaired? Or should I just start studying up on painting?

All the wood out of the transom area and light at the end of the tunnel back there.

I keep asking myself, do ya smell that? That's the smell of years of someone enjoying this boat mixed with the years of that you are adding to it. Then the Admiral asks me if I'm talking to myself again.

Not sure about those blocks. My 72 and 73 do not have them. As fall as gel over epoxy, I've read that it will work with the proper prep. Talk to west systems. That said I painted with Algrip and I am pleased how it is holding up. :)

Thanks for the reply Redstrat, I will check with West system and see what they say about it. For every person that says it is doable there are 2 other posts somewhere saying the world will end if you gel coat over epoxy. Those same people would probably stop me from running with scissors too though.:sssh:

My problem with Awlgrip though is that I would want to spray it just because I have experience with roll & tip(I used to deck on river boats and helper tugs) and I don't want that kind of finish. So that means I'd have to get everything to spray and learn how, both would be very costly, or pay someone to spray it and that would be very costly as well:shakehead:

I am searching here and Iboats to study up on bringing Gel. I do like the idea of getting a DA/Buffer/Polisher some pads and compound That would be useful later on when it comes to waxing the boat or truck, yeah still very handy for some time.

Getting there.

I now have 100% of the wood out of the transom area and I am about ready to get started on the replacement wood. I want to make sure I have this all correct.

I plan on using this plywood in 3/4" and 1/4". http://www.lowes.com/pd_12244-99899-T_1z10t52Z1z10t8c__?productId=50437966&pl=1

I will sandwich 2 sheets of 3/4" and the 1/4" will be used for the kickers.

I think this is the way to glue the sheets together for the transom, please correct me if I'm wrong.
faces_zpswpmdwwnr.jpg
I plan on using titebond platinum or gorilla glue for this with a strong lean towards the Titebond.

I have also decided that I am going to put a strong effort to saving the gel coat and painting the direct rear of the tansom and splashwell refit black to give a smoother transition and blend.:bigthumb:

I am getting more and more excited about getting this project on the water.

Thanks howieris, that's kinda what I thought but they still seemed out of place?
I am so close now and it has been a really long road but even now I feel like it was all worth it. I am just waiting on a timing light and new starter to get the TOP timed in and then it will be splash time.
