The Darkness!

OC, Give in to your feelings of acceleration and speed. Look upon the Black Motor with longing and appreciation. Lust to be out in front. Be quick to trade your other insignificant source of power and add dollars to it, if necessary, on your journey toward the Dark Side. Place the Black Motor upon the transom, or into the engine compartment, if necessary. Concentrate good quality fuel and oils, and feed this to the Black Motor. Let the power flow from your fingertips to the throttle. Let go of any confusion. Place a Mercury Marine Power sticker in the rear window of your pickup. Explore new worlds of acceleration and upper terminal velocity available with the Black Motor. Then you too, will know the power of the Dark Side.

Yes Jim, the midrange acceleration of the dark mota is very powerful.

The hot foot just needs to have the cable moved to the other mount so it pulls instead of pushes. The shifter cable works the same way as the OMC does. I was Told it was opposite so I switch my shifter arm accordingly and now the shifter works backwards. Gonna tackle that before I go out again.

I tought i had to buy new cables. thats good, as far as the gauges do i just mark them at the sending units and hook them to merc units? thanks

Yes, you do need new cables, sorry if I misled you. Its just that the one on the hotfoot will have to be moved to the other mount so it pulls, the shifter will work as before (i.e. pulling cable forward moves boat into forward).

I ordered a new harness through a friend. It worked fantastic, plugged right into my motor, and came with the key switch and everything. Which gauges are you referring to? The tach is supposed to work, mine is reading half so I'll have to get under there and change a setting, the trim gauge will not work, I ordered a new one, the warning horn is built into the harness I got, and that's probably about all there is. Stuff like the voltage gauge and fuel gauge are independent of the motor harness. Let me know and I can get you the part number off the box if you want it.

John

Volt meter is just hooked to the switched wire off the ignition, not part of the factory harness but simply tapped I into it. Water temp is also added on outside the factory harness. Water pressure is a hose so it's not involved with the harness either. Tach is supposed to be the same from OMC to Merc but my tach is reading half now. The signal for the tach will be provided in the gray wire in the Merc harness. This link was very useful to me:

Thanks, always been a black motor man ,just this boat came with the omc on it. the pro max has been hanging in my garage and wants to come out and play.

I think it's more like the power of the Great South Bay on Long Island is greater than the dark power wielded by this 250 Merc. I however will wield the power on my local lake and much more gently than the previous owner.

The dark side is not all its "cracked" up to be:

OUCH!

Can't believe no one makes an upgraded part for this as it is the piece that holds the upper motor mounts in place and it is made out of junk cast aluminum. Turns out Simon Motorsports makes a nice replacement:

John

I put the Bob's Machine solid mounts in my 225 opti before I put the powerhead back on it. I didn't know about the simon motorsports mounts at the time or I definitely would have done them. The Bob's still uses that bracket to hold them in. Still sucks either way...how's it running now that you got the coils all hooked back up?

Couldn't really open it up since I knew there was something amiss in the steering and I had my wife and one kid with me the day I got out. Runs nice and smooth now and midrange acceleration is fantastic. Punch it at 30 or 40 and it puts you back in the seat. The previous owner had solids put in. Probably not necessary at the speeds I am gonna run or water conditions I run in but I think the three bolts holding that clamp down worked loose and caused the problem. Gonna clean the threads and loctite those suckers now.

James Gang boat - You still boat on the Hudson? I kept my boat at Belle Harbor years ago and remember the name. The mechanic there had the red boat.

Not his best work since it's an oil soaked piece of cast but it works. Put it back together this morning, all good again. Still didn't get to let her eat. Might have to wait until the Romp.

The only way I ever got all the oil out of aluminium castings for a good weld was to have the parts put through the dechroming process. Cleans
all the pores 100%.
