Thinking of getting a 'Mate!

Found this Checkmate local on craigslist.

Is this a good price on this boat, I checked NADA and it said it was only worth around $2K - $2.5K

I received pics from the owner, looks really clean. He sent some hi-res pics. Just gonna use this thing to cruise up and down the ICW and maybe do some skiiing/knee boarding.

May go check it out in person this weekend. Any odds and ends I should look for? I know to check the transom, check the engine, etc. If the engine checks out this thing looks like a steal. Will probably keep it long-term, or use it for the summer then try to flip it for whatever I end up paying for it. Depends on a few things, not financial related.

You should check the floor for soft spots, in front of the bench seat and under the Captains chairs. FYI, I bought a 1996 Pulse 170 w/ a 1999 200 Merc for $6000.00 a year and half ago.

Had my father call the guy as he knows more about boats. Here are some of the facts:

- current owner is the 4th owner
- 3rd owner blew the engine, and had it rebuilt
- current owner says he had it out last weekend on the river. Has no idea of the hours that have been put on the boat since the rebuild.
- Owner said $4,800 is the lowest he will go (I think offer $4K)
- Boat was kept under a barn/shed
- There is some paint fading

I have my father running by to check out the boat to see if it is worth my time to run up and check it out in person. He lives lives 5 minutes away from the guy, whereas I'm 1.5 hours.

My concerns are now that the boat has a rebuilt engine. Unsure of documentation on it at this time. How much does it cost to rebuild an engine (200 Merc)?

If the hull checks out, should I ask this guy to take it out for a quick demo run?

I would ask for a demo run before you buy it for sure. that boat should move pretty good. Keep in mind that NADA price is for the boat only. engine and trailer are extra.

$4500 would be a good price as long as it is solid and is not all faded out.

TheNerd just picked his up for a a bit more than that but his is cherry.

I agree w/ Matt said, go for a ride check it over good, then decide. Good Luck

Also be aware that boat is rated for a 175, not a 200. You may run into trouble with the law and your insurance agent.

I think when the motor was blown they had it bored out...There is no number on the cover. Just says "Merc" on it. Maybe I am missing something here but if they pulled the serial from the motor, it would probably come up as a 185...?

FYI, clear coat is faded away in some places and paint has faded around as well. My father is rather particular on things he owns so he may have just been picking the thing apart... I'm gonna run up and check it out myself this weekend if the guy is available and then, maybe a demo run next week if everything checks out. Also gotta a line on one that is a lot closer to me now...to be continued...

As far as the NADA, that is a bunch of crap. Do some looking, boats this size and price range are hard to find. Lots of stuff from the 70's and early 80's and thats what sells for 2-4 thousand. Ask some people on here what they would sell their pulse for.

However if it is beat up, the price may be lower. I would stay away from anything that has a funny story about the motor. Such as a mystery rebuild or missing decals. But thats just my opinion
