Timing a 350mag

What's the stock timing on a carb 350 mag? And has anyone ever messed with the timing to get more power from the boat. If so what did it get to and how did it run and safe and worth it?

Stock timing should be 8 degrees BTDC on your engine. Most 5.7L modules run 22 Degrees advance (not including initial timing) Best thing to do would be to power time the engine above 4000 RPM and make sure total timing is around 30 Degrees (22 advance plus 8 initial) and adjust accordingly. Thunderbolt ignition modules have a total advance "window" with about a 4 degree Min/Max difference, the timing graph in the service manual will show a total MAX timing range of 26 Degrees advance. If wanting to add more, I would suggest advancing in 2 degree increments while you've got the boat in the water to be able to evaluate the changes. Just watch out for any engine pinging at top end, especially if running mid or low octane fuel
