Timing Advance for 454 Magnum Motor

Magnum Thunder

New member
Mercruiser says initial timing set @ 8 degrees before TDC. What is the ultimate advance setting using the Thunderbolt IV ignition for the best performance? Anyone Know? We are headed for the Boyne Thunder Poker Run on Friday. I'll bet Jamie from Lakeside would know.

Depending on which ignition module you have. There's a couple of modules with different advances. Are you looking to bump your base/initial timing ?

Big Red should be pretty close with 36. Maybe 34 if you run mid grade fuel.

My blower motor I actually used a v-6 module so I could get more base/initial timing(helped with blower surge/idle) The v-6 did not have the advance of some v-8 modules but I was not concerned with major advance on my motor(I think I was 28-30 advance with the blower) a naturally aspirated engine with less boost/compression will like more timing.

...which begs the question, Are these modules fairly swappable? My local boat shop has one laying around for an 89 V8 boat but can't tell me if it will work. It's used and would like to buyit for a spare.
