TO JACK, OR NOT TO JACK???

I have a V-141, which I will be rigging soon with a 90h.p. Evinrude. I want to hear your thoughts on jack plates. I'd really like to hear from guys with under 18' boats. Do you prefer the boat with your jack plate, or did you like it before better? I know there are threads on this subject, but I'd like to have your latest opinions/experiences!!

I have 14' cobra with 115 merc on it which I believe to be the same as the later mx14 hull, it currently has a plate on it, but not for long. It only lets me run real fast, anything in between and I am porpoising. I probably would not use a plate on your boat unless it only give 1-2 inches of setback, the one I have has 8, which lets it be real stable at high speeds, like over 70, if you are looking to drag race the boat then use one, otherwise forget it.

gtrumpet,
How badly do you porpous? Is it constant, or does it only do it in mid speeds, just before you hit top end? How fast have you had your boat, and were you at WOT? Did the jack plate effect your turning/steering/etc as well, or was it just all crap? I'd also appreciate anyone elses comments that have had jack plate experiences good or bad.

the porpoising wasn't constant on my boat, with it occuring pretty much after planing out up till I pushed it past half. I also had a extreme amount of set back on a small hull. It was extremely stable at high speeds. I had only opened up to about 2/3 of the throttle, because I was running a 19p, which was way short of the pitch needed. my boat has had about 6-7 different motors on it everything from a 80 merc up to 125 evinrude. From what I gather it was mostly used for drag racing on the maumee river, so the lift plate on it was approiate. for me the porpoising was detremental as I don't intend to drag race with it. I'm not really sure how fast I was going, all I know was I was passing boats that run mid 50 like they were up on blocks

Hope this helps.

If my memory serves me correctly the 85h.p. Evinrude weights 357lbs.

I was wondering if a 4" jackplate would make a big difference in handling, or just top end mph? If it is to simply get another 3-5mph, I don't know wether it would be worth buying one.

I don't want to step all over your thread Aqua but I thought maybe my question relates to yours. I have a Pulse 185 with a 175 Merc on back. Right now the center of my prop sits 7" below my pad. The standard mounts for the motor are positioned on the center holes. I could raise the motor 2 holes higher and gain about 2 inches. Will this help with top end? Will it affect my ride in any other ways? I'm just wondering if I can gain anything without adding a jackplate. Thanks!
