To wing it or not?

I've got a '78 Inmate 1 with Merc 3.7 (190 hp)Alpha One. It runs between 61-64 mph (gps) when the wind and water is perfect.

What I am wondering is if I installed a wing on the back would this wing help raise top speed or would it just make it a nightmare to setup and drive properly and safely?

My wife wants a little shade for herself and I thought the wing could do double duty in this instance.

A WING ON A BOAT???? YOU ARE NOT APPROACHING ANY KIND OF SPEED TO MAKE A WING EFFECTIVE AND AS FAR AS SHADE IS CONCERNED THEIR IS NOT ENOUGH SURFACE AREA TO AFFORD ANY REAL SHADE FOR YOUR WIFE. BUY A FOLD DOWN BIMINI TOP INSTEAD. IF YOU REALLY WANT A WING, BUY AN AIRPLANE!!!!

Hmmm, I once saw an airplane flying at 35 mph. It was called a Maule or something like that. Just thought that lifting my boat slightly out of the water, at speed, with a wing would cause less drag translating into more speed. I don't think a bimini top would stay together at sixty mph. Any more opinions?

the weight of a wing willl be more than any lifting capablities. there no replacemt for good old displacement. ( cubic inches that is)

While it would probably generate positive lift at the speeds you're talking about, a typical airplane wing generates it's best lift at a positive angle of attack (about 12 deg. if I remember right). At that angle of attack and enough surface area to generate noteworthy lift, it would probably generate more drag than you would lose by lifting the hull.
