Hey everyone-

My trailer is mostly still painted, but has tiny specks of rust all over. I think this is normal. Does anyone know of any roll-on paint that would take care of this without sanding? I haven't looked into it yet, I assume that Rust-Oleum makes something along this line, but I haven't heard whether they actually work.

If nothing like this exists I plan to call around to auto paint places and get quotes- I'm sure it would be cheap to have a shop blast and paint an 18' trailer.
 
ive painted both of my trailers using a spray paint engine enamel. it has ceramic in it and is very very durable and when it drys it will look like it has a clear coat on it. 18ft trailer would prolly do good with 2 cans and you can find the paint at any auto parts store! just an idea thrown out threre for ya!
 
I was just trying to think of a way to paint the trailer without having to take the boat off it. With spray paint I'd have to mask off the whole boat. If I could find a paint to roll on it'd be easy to do without worrying about the boat.
If I do find a place to keep the boat, I'm guessing a 'professional' shop would be nearly as cheap as me doing it... still have to check into that.
 
Go on line to the Eastwood Company in PA. They list a encapsulator
that stops rust and you can paint over it. A friend used it on a rusty piece of farm equip. and it is still holding 2 years later.
 
i used truck bed liner spray paint from lowes. gives it a rough texture which is different and havent had any rust issues yet. did with boat on. just had to tape up small area at a time while spraying.
 
Tractor supply sells some brush on rust converter for about 17 bucks a bottle. I am going to try it on mine. I'll let you know how it works.
 
Anyone tried HERCULINER? A roll on line-x/rhinoliner..... The saltwater down here will eat my trailer alive sooner than later if I don't do something to protect it.

I tried it this weekend, it did what it said,but you cant just slap it on there, you have to wire brush and clean the area then leave a little rust on there then put it on with a brush let it dry for about an hour then do a second coat. I haven't top coated it yet but I think it will work out OK. I have a white trailer so the rust really shows I will post some pics when I am done.

I think if you do all that prep work, you could just paint it with some rust-oleum! I may do that for the whole trailer as most of it isn't bad, then spot treat any areas where rust comes back.

Unfortunatly I didn't take any pics of the before, I wish I had, cause knowing me I will go way beyond "touching up the trailer" and do the whole thing over a section at a time.

I just preped mine by removing the loose rust then spraying rust-oleum through my paint gun. I go around and touch it up 2x a year with a spray can and it is holding up real good. Mine is white also and white shows the rust almost before it starts rusting!!
 
yea, I need to touch mine up where I lost a tire last yr.Spray Gun with automotive paint & clear coat. Yellow of course
 
I'm debating- if/when I paint it, should I go with black like it is right now, or brown to match the boat? Leaning towards brown, although it might just look dirty all the time.
 
If you went with a two tone brown metal flake paint to match the boat it would look really nice, But that would be going a little beyond touching it up, BUT, a dark brown paint with a lighter brown pinstripe and some decent wheels would finish it off nicely.
 
brushing with rustoleum is the best deal...lays down great last unreal !! easy to touch up if need be...love the stuff..oh cheap to !!
