trim limit switches and position indicators...needed?

The marina mech. say he wouldn't hook them back up. He claims they are not really needed and if you pay attention they arent really an issue?

Does the trim need limited? Can you live without the trim guage? Is it that much work? he wanted 4.5 hours to do it?

whats the real deal?

i don't about everbody ,but use my trim gage all the time know right where i like to run for certain speed or to keep drive shaft stright also i went to mechincal gage no more bouncing needles or adjusting

i was just reading your other post about your coupler... while the drive was off he should have replaced your sending units, its easier with the drive off.. and super easy when the engine is out.. and rightly should have probably added an hour to your coupler job.. your limit is a safety design to ensure you wont run your drive to high.. damaging your u joints and gimball bearing.. or worse your u joints tearing a hole in your bellows..

The trim limiter is a must on an I/O. This is for the reasons stated above. If you run your drive up to high while the motor is running it will hurt the u-joints,coupler, in-put shaft bearings etc.. This is due to to much of an angle of opperation on the u-joints. The guage sender, you could live with-out, but when you change the limiter ya might as well change both. Later, addgas.

Thanks guys! he almost had me talked out of doing it. Apparently it is a pain to do correctly so he didn't want to do it. Told him i would come up and do it while the engine was out if he wanted me too but alas he says he will do it. Really shouldn't be that hard with engine out of the way should it?

Thanks again

with the motor out? maybe 20 minutes if you stop for coffee!!! While the motors out - throw in a new a bilge pump - easy to do while the engine is out. Sounds like you need a new mechanic if he doesn't want to do the work!

Ditto on chris's comments. sounds like he's lazy or tryin to make it sound like he's doin brain surgury so he can jack-up his prices. Good luck with the repairs. Later, addgas.

glad your gonna fix things right.. there are other things to consider, which happen when equipent doesnt work right.. in this situation.. you could have a broken wire on your senders shooting 12 volts into your transom assembly every time you trim.. thus causing electrolosis, corrosion.. yada yada.. stuff..

When i bought my boat it had caps over the trim guage and sending unit. My mechanic changed them out with my help in about 4 hrs. Now i know where exactly my outdrive is in shallow water.

Sterndrive newbie here. Why is it easier to change trim limiter with engine out. I thought units were on outdrive. Also why two units Thanx

Trim limiters are nothing but junk! Running the drive with too much trim will not hurt a thing, but speed. If you want to argue the issue think about how far you can twist the U joint sideways when you steer.

I would never want a boat without trim gauges.

I have the Merc HP Transom and mechanical indicators. No trim limiter here and I've run 1300+HP through a Bravo XR with no U joint failures. Now the gears are another story.

well it is the wires that have to pass through the outdrive mount. With the motor out you can get to the wires and the grommet they go through from the inside of the boat. They have two switches one on the left is a position indicator so you know where the outdrive is from the dash. The right side one is a limit switch to keep the outdrive from being lifted to far while in gear.

hope this helps.
