V-Mate I Windshield

Hi Everyone,

I need a windshield for my V-Mate I. Any ideas where I can find a used one or has anyone had any luck making their own. I tried one place and they wanted 500 bucks to make a new one, not sure if they are trying to hoop me.

Any help would be appreciated. I will try to post pictures.

with the right sheet plastic (polycarb or something) and some heat you should be able to make it pretty easy, I made one for a 1956 run-about and it wasn't too hard. I just took the old piece out, covered it in paper, pulled that off and layed it on a flat sheet of new plastic, cut it out, and heated/made it fit in the frame. It wasn't a super complex windshield though...

Thanks!

Looking at my curve is it more or less than yours was?

What is the right type of polycarbonate?

Appreciate your response!

I do not remember what polycarb I used, I talked to the place I bought it from and they helped me pick the right one. I'd say you could make that piece, but It's hard to say I've only done it once. also, the polycarb wont be very cheap (it was $50 for a 48"x24" piece when I bought it) and your gonna need a bigger single piece than that which will get even pricier, so the quote you got might be pretty fair if they install the windshield back onto the boat and everything

Any luck

Have you done any research on the windshield? Mines got the stock lght blue one, and would like to make a tinted one like you have. (minus the crack of course : )

Hi mikesteward

I went to home depot and they said they could definitely order the plexiglass or lexan for the window for about 100 bucks. However I was discouraged because the guy said that the curve I have would be hard to impossible to match with just hair dryers. He said I probably needed to get a form made and then have it placed in an oven, which is of course what the guy quoting 500 was going to do. So I ended up gluing the window using some extreme marine glue and clamping the whole window. It seems strong I will see how it lasts this season. Most of the work is in making the form for these windows and I still want a new window made and was thinking of putting it off until fall/winter. If our windows are the same we could use the same form which could save some money. Depends how far away you are I guess, I'm in Hamilton.
