"Wasted Income" 1986-2011 R.I.P.

I am very sorry for your loss. I too read through your whole build thread when I first got here. An electrical fire is one of those things that can get anyone at anytime. I've often thought about putting a a cut-off switch at the battery so that I can cut all power when I get done for the day and this has made up my mind.

John

...but lest we not forget the good times. Watching the restoration thread, seeing the powerplant installed for the first time, finding and eliminating the gremlins on its sea trials and most of all, you out there having fun in the boat that you brought back to life. A fire can't take those smiles from you. Everyone's Checkmates are going to pass someday although not necessarily in as dramatic fashion (TLC must be flammable).
To the good times:

Dude that sucks, my heart gos out to you, In remember how I felt when mine broke loose and smashed aganst a wall for an hour, but it was repairable. Ill tell you though, It made me ill.
BUT!!! I guarrenty, at some point, when you get behind the wheel of your new boat most of that feeling will go away. Kind of like in high school, when a girl friend broke up with you, how you felt, then you got a little action from a new girl. It eased the pain a little. ;)

Sorry to hear about your loss. Its one of those events that just makes you hang your head and shake it. Glad to hear your family, home and yourself are safe though.

Mike

Brian, there are no words to describe the pain you are feeling and my heart goes out to you:shakehead:. The boat can be replaced and thank god you guys were not on the boat when the fire hit:thumb:. I've rebuilt a few boat ressurections and know the hard work and pride that goes into each one...but half the fun is the ressurection itself:D. You succeded in bringing an old boat back to life and got to enjoy it with your kids. I'm sure another boat will be in your future!!:bigthumb:

Very sorry for your loss, it is a terrible feeling to lose something you have put that much time and effort into. I'm very happy that neither you or your loved ones were on it at the time, or got injured trying to put it out. I've seen several go up in flames over the years and it is frightening how fast they burn and how hard they are to put out. Hopefully people will take your advice and think about fire suppression systems.

I feel your pain, and glad you are ok. I now carry an extra fire extinguisher in my bunk, and mount a smoke detector somewhere in the truck. Not a good feeling to wake up to fire.

Stood in a snow pile wearing only my underwear watching this burn.

Brain,
I am very sorry for your loss. As the others have mentioned, reading yor threads and knwoing the amount of time energy money and love you put into that boat makes me sick.

Your boat was definitely one of the ones I had hoped to oneday see at the rally.

I have also thought of installing a makeshift fire suppression system in my boat. When I was installing the second battery I thought about installing a halon extinguisher (I still have a few laying around) under the back seat with the hose plumbed into the engine compartment. In the event of an engine fire, as long as the hatch was down, it should work. Even though the Halon used is portable extinguishers is a different chemical formula than the Halon used in fire suppression systems, it should till work.

All you would have to do is lift the seat, pull the pin, and squeeze the lever.

Like everyone else has said, That really SUCKS!!

Unforntunatly i have seen a few boats burn down to the water line, what a sick feeling.. But they did not have the labor of love involved with them and most of all i had no clue who they where.

The thought of a boat burning to the water especially while sleepin on it, is horrifing!! It should make everyone seriously consider a fire supression system, IT WILL BE MY NEXT PURCHASE!!!

i hope all goes well with the Insurance Co, i hope it not the same company you went rounds with when yur truck that was stolen.

Sorry Coop, but that just gave me a visual I didn't want. ;) :poke:

I got a perko switch(and second battery) sitting on my work bench. My plan was to build a rack to hold my second battery and install it this week. What my thoughts are on it goes both ways. IF I had it and it was turned off then it would not have caught fire that night. However the short would have shorted again when I opened it up at the river, causing the fire while on the water....

This should fix her right up in no time flatDeWalt849RotaryBuffer.jpg
Your a dick Dave:lol:!!! Don't think a buffer will work on this one. However, that is the exact buffer I have:thumb: You should come over and give it a swirl. Stop by Wendy's and grab some food on your way:poke:

"Things" can be replaced no matter their significance.
So very true!

That is the point behind me posting this thread. I am hoping people do think twice about it and even spend a few dollars to prevent or protect themselves.
No, after the truck I switched to Allstate. So far, it has been great. They are sending a surveyor to appraise the boat. And will take into account all my receipts in the final value. When the truck was stolen, geico was the worst experience I ever had, even accusing me of steeling the truck. It took 1.5 years to settle and the only winners were the legal team:pissed:. This is the 3 claim ever in my life so hopefully it will hot hurt my rates that bad:o

How about I skip the Wendys, pick up some beer and we can sit around and sing kum-ba-ja.

Since you seem to be taking this pretty well I'll go ahead and say something I was holding back from the moment I read the first post in this thread. Its ironic the the boat's name was" Wasted Income" and this is the way it ended up. :( Kind of scary almost, eh?
