Wet Sand Gel Coat??

renegade

Member
Just bought a 1992 CM. The gel coat on the top deck is very faded and rough. You can feel the roughness. Has anyone had any luck wet sanding and buffing the gel coat when it is this bad? Also how thick is the gel coat?

Gel coat is pretty thin, not sure if i would sand it.There are a lot of products out there that you can use on it.Look for the thread on aqua buff ,i think it might point you in the right direction.

perfectly fine to wetsand.. start with 1500 grit then hit it with 2000 and then a good buff.. and then wax.. just dont go too hard with the sanding.. take your time and it will look nice

If your gel is rough to the touch, You'll have a rough road to tow.But you can give a try. Start with a 1000 you'll be forever with 1500. Been wet sanding mine for yrs.(black:brickwall:!) GOOD LUCK!

In the process of Resto on my enforcer, spent alot of time on the deck.

Wet sanded 800,1000,1200 Heavy compound, polish, wax

Turned out pretty nice for a 1994 treated poorly.

You could try a high speed wheel with some 3M Finess. You have to be careful that you don't burn through the gelcoat. Keep the RPM at about 2000-2500 and use a light sweeping motion. After the shine comes back, finish the project with a good wax!!

Check out this thread !!

Check out Minor Threats thread he just went through that with his enchanter !! It came out BEUTIFUL !!!m_c6ef88101f4e9d8ee36790048f0d472e.jpgI have seen in person and he did a sweet job with it !! Not to mention it's damn fast !!

Mine had been sitting in the old mans back yard for 8 years and the gel coat felt like sandpaper when I started. Hit it with 20 or so sheets of wet 1200 grit and then buff with 3M liquid rubbing compound and finish with finesse it.
