What swt up will work the best on a 21' Enchanter O/B

Bought it as a project with no power just wondering the best set up for it. What to power with a merc 200. Should I put it on a off set bracket? I was also thinking of making the 200 a 15" mid. Just saw how my cousins superboat was set up. Would this be a good combo?

Thanks Chris

I would be interested to see how the boat performed out of the hole with a 15'' mid...

I am pretty confident that the Checkmate transom was specifically designed to run a 20", but that is what makes this so fun (getting different results from trying the improbable)

Good luck.

And oh yeah...:welcome:

:welcome:.... Would the prop shaft even reach under the bottom? I would think a 15" mid would constantly bury the engine in water in a mate.

Enchanter Power

Chris, I bought an 87 Enchanter about a year ago but the floor was so bad I didn't get to use it as it was. It had a 200 Merc, no jack plate and set in the 2nd hole which put the propshaft about 3-1/2' below the bottom. I rode in the boat 10 or 12 years ago and it worked just fine, speedo showed 70. After I rebuilt the floor I hung a 225 SM on it in the same holes and it went 72.5 GPS. I have since raised the engine to the 4th hole which is about 2" below but haven't run it w/GPS yet--maybe today. After I see what it does I'll add a jack plate and see where it is.
I'm running a 26 Tropy. I'll keep you posted.

That boat is set up with a 20" midsection. Even with the 20" it is still easy to swamp the motor. I would not even want to consider running a 15" mid. I also have a 21' O/B that I am going to power with a 275 merc. 25" mid. I will be running a mild 4" setback.

There was gentleman on this site with a one and he had a 2.5 efi 260hp and he'd get 77-78 mph with his setup. He sold it and went with a 242 sport.I think he misses enchanter now!

Enchanter setup

Went riding yesterday to see if moving the motor up would do anything. Nothing really changed. 2" below the pad but no set back. I can't turn the 26 Trophy but 5900 and 72MPH looks like all I'll get without a jack plate. I would like to try my stock 200 case before I put the jack plate on just to see how it behaves compared to my Sportmaster. The slip now figures at about 7 to 8% so if I can get to 6500RPM I'll be close to 85MPH. If I get to 80 I'll be pretty happy because when I went from an Allison to the Enchanter I didn't really think I'd see 80. Nice thing about living here in LA, I've got a lot of boating weather left this year. I'll keep you posted.

hey i got a 21 enchanter 1979 that im redoing. made it outboard n put a 250.. wat can u say about the boat. still haven put it in the water

I haven't gotten the boat in yet still in the paint process just got the floor done. I went for a ride in one a couple of years ago and loved it. Always an awesome looking boat.

I would do at least 10 inches of setback and use a mechanical adjustable jack plate, add a low water pick up nosecone (I like Bob's) do some solid motor mounts.

My '79 Enchanter running '95 carb'd Merc 2.5 twisting a Mazco RE-4 26 prop around 7500 rpm. GPS @ 74mph

well I have a 88 20 footer, with a 6 inch set back and its setting about 3 inches below the pad. I only have a xr4 150 with some work done to it, spinning a 23 trophy, to 6200 and hitting 59.8gps..not to bad for a 150 I thought..

A 15'' mid, with about 10'' of set back would work just fine on a checkmate. What you would do is move the motor back, but not up. You could mount the engine at basically the same height as everyone else with a 20'' mid (prop shaft to bottom measurement) but the power head would be 5'' lower giving it a much lower center of gravity. If the boat has a pad, it would help a great deal with chine-walk & might also lose as much as 40 lbs. I wanted to use a 15'' mid on my V8, but its about 2k for either an F1 mid or a Taylor Marine set up. The "cool factor" of a 15'' mid is off the chart, especially with open exhaust.
