Which prop?

Im looking for any suggestions on which prop i should start out with. I have a 1981 V-Mate I with 1973 Johnson 135hp, that i modified and geting about 165hp. They engine has no rev limiter, and should run 7k without a problem. The engine is set back 5.5in on a tilt bracket and in the bottom hole(all the way up). The boat is in great shape and should be close to factory wieght.

Im looking to get the best top speed out of it. I have a 21" SS that i really dont think is going to work, its one of them ones that came painted black from OMC and not really a performance prop. I dont really know much about props.

Tryed the 21" omc ss prop today. Had the boat out for the first time. The engine went straight to 7K and had to back off, I did get 59mph on the gps running it at 7K. The engine still has a lot more, just need more prop. But how much more?

I did have someone try taking a couple of pictures but it was dark and the water was shallow by the dock so i couldnt get to close. I really liked the way it rode and the cmc power tilt that i rigged with the mercruiser trim and tilt power really worked great.

I am running a omc ballistic on my predictor and it works great on the small boat. But, keep me posted on what props you try. I would like to try a raker myself. You should go at least 24P maybe 26P to start.

Hey Ryan,

Glad to see you were finally able to test run it. I talked to you a while back when you were looking to sell it. You emailed me some pictures and you could not wait to get it on the water. I never did get a chance to come out and look at it and I did end up buying another boat. Anyhow, you are most likely the closest person to me on this forum, so you will have to let me know where you plan on boating this year. I would still like to come out and see what you've done with this boat. I will be mounting a Merc 200hp on the back of mine and might need some help. Take care

24" raker. ill give it a shot. Thanks.

Im really please with the way this boat turned out, some problems i thought i were going to have with the gel coat worked themselves out. One good wax and any inperfections were gone.

I did run into another problem when i got the engine back to the shop. Took out the spark plugs to check them and it looks like the engine was running alittle lean. So i have to re jet it now. I dont know how much time im going to get to work on it, especially since i have another boat now and with school and work. But ill keep you guys posted.

Bob, no hard feelings. After you spend so much time working on a boat its hard to let it go anyways. Its alittle small for this area, but its a great boat and someone is going to have a lot of fun with it.

I launch out of pastrick marinia in east chicago, IN. Ill definately be spending a lot of time out on the lake this summer. Last year i was using my dads 28' world cat with twin 225 hondas on the back and i couldnt really afford the gas to go anywhere but west beach. But with this new one i hope to be able to expand my range and head downtown occationally. Running two engines is expensive if they are hondas or not, would cost me about $70 for the day to go downtown, now ill be about half that hopefully. keep in touch and ill see you out there this summer.

I don't know how much you modified this engine but most old omc V-4's were not good for above 6K, I had a 73 135 stock, the power dropped off above 5500 and the engine actually only put out about 110 at the prop. I had it on a mx-15 and it was so light in the bow i could barely keep it down, I ended up removing the jackplate and it helped and I also ran 21p at 5600 RPM. I always felt it would have done better with a cleaver-style prop, something without cup in it to give it stern lift. If you are really hitting 7K with more to go, I would at least run a 26p to start.

Im realitively certain about how much hp its putting out, i know that it was only putting out bout 110 stock which is why i had it modified when i had the powerhead rebuilt. Had it rebuilt by a shop that specializes in outboard engines and are very good at what they do. I wouldnt try something like that on my own. I also did some tweeking and bolt on stuff on my own. About how many rpms it likes the best, ill let you know when i find the right prop but im pretty certain its going to be at least 6200.

We really liked the raker on Daren34's Diplomat. Had to put a jack plate on it to stop the chine walk though.2.0 loopcharched 140hp johnnyrude 6
'cmc hydraulic jack plate 13 1/4 x 22 omc Raker 6300 rpm (long before the days of cheap gps) jack plate was mounted one hole from the top and so was the engine. could have used a little more lift, but we did not have a water pressure gauge at the time.
