Will this work?

I currently own a 1979 checkmate eluder with a 150 Evinrude motor on it. I recently discovered that I have a bad cylinder on the Evinrude. I am looking at replacing it with a 1998 mercury 3.0 litre 225 motor. I am running a jackplate with 6 inches of setback. I would like for some of the more experienced checkmate owners to tell me if my transom would support the motor. I would really hate to drop a motor in the river and tear the transom off my boat. Thanks in advance.

How much does it weigh?

I replaced my 2.4 Merc with a 3.0 225Pro Xs on my Trimate. The 225 is at least 125# heavier than the 2.4. I think it is 525# ish.

Plusses:
It uses half the gas,
It is 7mph faster,
It starts easy, just turn the key.
No choke or fast idle required.
It is quieter,
The bottom end torque is awesome, amazing hole shot,
No smoke,
Smooth idle
Factory low water pickup in the torque master lower unit.

Minuses:
Too heavy, the back of the boat sits a lot lower in the water.
It is huge,
The ski pole is almost not tall enough.
It is fat. I have an old custom canvas cover for a 235 'Rude and it won't start to go over it.

I don't know if this helps, I don't know how much difference there is in the 3.0 motors.
