"Wanted" Windaway screens

There all tucked away.
Once you see exacatly what the parts are its not much. I can go to hd and get flat bar and with a few bends have the same pieces. Then a couple screws, rubber pieces and plexi it would be done.

Can someone post up a closer pic of the mounting hardware? I can definitely make some up, but wanted to get a better idea of how they mount. I saw them this past weekend, but didn't look closely at them... wish I had now.

Hey Spencer, here are some pics of the windaway hardwares......

This is a pic of the pieces for one of the two clamps on the windaway.
At the top of the pic i seperated these pieces because they are the "optional use" pieces for use on windshields with a radical slope back angle {you'll see in an upcoming pic of the install instruction}
So the optional use pieces at top of pic are...
...A "J" angled piece of steel
...two white flat plastic washers
...0ne machine screw
...one lock nut
...one finish washer

The bottom half of the pic shows the pieces of the clamp itself
...tube of glue to affix rubber pads to clamp jaws
...three sided wing knob
...above that a solid rubber block with 1/4 hole drilled the long way
...1/4 X 20 machine screw --- the length of this screw is determined by the thickness of your windshield frame.
...Above that a plastic block with a threaded hole {1/4 X 20}
...Flat plastic washer
...Above that a plastic block with a NON threaded hole
...Two rubber pads
...Above that a stainless flat washer

Anther pic of same pieces from other angle.

A pic of the assembled clamp without the optional use "J" angled braket installed -- also obviously the plexi windscreen not attached yet either.
And the rubber pads not yet glued on.

Another pic of the same assembled clamp from other angle

Good luck...

I'm following up with someone on an alternative for Windaways.
Hope to have more information in the coming weeks.

I'll keep you posted.

Looks like my alternative is proving harder to realise. Got en email from the guy last night saying he's struggling to find a clamp/hinge to fit my Starliner windshield dimensions from his European supplier. I've gone back this morning asking to see what the supplier has in his range as I'd be willing to purchase one or two to see if I can make it work myself.

He offered me an alternative with a local custom fabrication shop but I'm not willing to spend big $$ on this.

The background to this is that he sells similar screens for motorcycles and I asked him if he could get his hardware supplier to offer anything that could clamp to our windshields.
Not having the boat there for him to work with isn't helping, but I'm not willing to tow it out west either for this! :shakehead:

Stay tuned.

Not knowing whether this first option will work out anytime soon - and I'm already in the season - I've come across these:

Hinges-GN-151.2.jpg

I ordered 4 this morning from the US Distributor http://www.jwwinco.com/
A pair for each side - driver and passenger - of the Starliner.

I would prefer something less permanent (these will require drilling into the windshield frame), but willing to give them a shot when I have the right plexiglass acquired and cut to size.

Anyone got any thoughts on what type of plexiglass and a supplier to consider?

OK. Here's my idea of how to attach the windaway home brew edition without drilling into the frame:

I can have one of the sheet metal guys at work make the C channel out of 3/16" aluminum and a relatively tight fit over the thickness of the windshield frame. I can drill and tap the hole for the knob to clamp the channel to the frame and also the holes to attach the locking hinges. We can dip that bracket into Plasti-Dip so it doesn't tear the frame up. I might say leave enough space between the C channel and the frame to slide a piece of aluminum in there on the knob side so that it doesn't damage the frame. If you don't mind me asking how much were the 4 hinges shipped?

Better knob that won't require a shim to protect the windshield frame:

John

$15.39 per hinge

I like the idea above...a lot!
I'll get measurements for the plexiglass over the next few days when I uncover the boat.

John and Kris,

What have you figured on to act as a compression, preventing the hinged part from rotating freely. Don't you need some kind of lock or compression on the hinge to keep it stiff in the upright position?

Jim

Jim,
These hinges I have bought this week have a locking mechanism via the handle

Hinges-GN-151.2.jpg

I'm with one on each side of each screen that they will be adequate at speed to hold the screens upright.

The hinges Kris ordered/linked to verify a lever on the side to lock them. I'm considering forgoing the hinges on mine as I have no need to adjust the angle.

If you guys get this all worked out i would probably be in for a set of clamps if you decide your willing to make a few extra sets!

Kris, that is a nice hinge unit. With one on each side of each screen you should be safe from movement from the wind.

John, If you use the screws that you posted the url for, that will make it easy to remove when you put your cover back on.

Both of your methods will serve the purpose you are trying to accomplish.

What ever happened to to the good feeling of having wind in your face? LOL :D
