Wiring issues 1973 Merc 1500

New member
I am working on bringing a 1973 mercury 1500 back to life. It ran a couple of years ago and when I got into it I found most all of the wiring dry roted. So I am trying to find a wiring diagram for it.

Thanks all

Are you talking about the wiring under the hood that is easy, the issue is if you can save the wiring harness under the hood, lots of times you can peel the tape back and extend the wires with new, you'll probably have to replace the stator though they're usually rotted right to the housing, let me know if you need anything I have alot of that stuff laying around

Well I found a wiring diagram for it and found that I had the the starter wire crossed with the coil wire in the harness. Got that straightened out and still had nothing pulled the control box apart and found the wires were toast in it so I disided that when I got it going I would hard wire it to the boat and only use the box for throtle controls. The new problem is that when I hit the starter I lose all voltage I am thinking a bad battery or a issue with the starter. when I get back in town I will take them both to get tested. Thanks for the reply I will keep you posted. Any Ideas let me know.

Have a good one

Josh

You may also want to check for a bad ground connection. A drop in voltage is a common side effect. Found this out on my brothers boat the hard way!
