Would you buy 89-92 251

Would you buy a 251 with a case of boat pox on the whole bottom? It just had a new floor, rear stringers and transom professionally installed. It's priced the same as the rest of them but its starting to seem they all have bottom pox? Is there any 89-92's out there with clean bottoms?

Pretty much all boats get osmotic blistering, even high and dry trailered boats. Wet carpeted bunks get a boat loaded onto them, don't have much of a chance to dry, and the water in the carpet eventually works it's way under the gel and blistering happens. You just can't see that with the boat sitting on the trailer. Boats that sit tied up to a dock get to enjoy the blistering all over the entire bottom, unless they get good bottom paint applied every year or so. Blisters or bottom paint, not sure which is worse.

Yes the blisters are over the whole bottom. Seller said its not a big deal but I can only see it getting worse. I think it might make it a lot harder to sell if needed. Just trying to see how common it is with 251's

I would stay away from it myself, may make it hard to sell in the future. I have had some old Checkmates myself. 78,89,91, no blisters there. Mr.Buss has a 251 from that vintage and his hull is spotless. Keep looking you will find the right boat. Where are you located? There have been some nice 251's here in Michigan for sale.

I agree w- Nerd. Unless the guy is giving you a super price, I would pass. There are to many good deals on late 80s and 90s era 25's out there. I always think about the resale factor when buying a boat.......and that would turn a lot of people off.

Thanks for the replies. I think I was trying to talk myself into. I may make a low offer but I don't think that will go anywhere so I guess I will keep looking.

In southern Ontario, have travelled as far as CT and in NY state.

My Persuader had blistering on the back areas because the P.O. had left it tied up to a dock. Because I always used a boat lift, the blisters never got any worse. I got a great deal on a good boat because of it.

Proper blister repair is an expensive job, and not worth it on older boats unless you get a smoking deal on one.
There are less than proper repairs, that would have been perfect for boats like JW's where he was taking care of it so that any blisters wouldn't get worse.

Boats will blister right through bottom paint, so don't think that will protect a bottom.
