    4-Blade Prop on 17' Checkmate

It looks like Spring is here to stay so today I took the winter covering off my Spectra 17 and started up the engine, etc. While doing so I measured the engine height. My measurements came out the same as yours, i.e. 5" and 22". Last summer I was getting about 40 to 41 MPH at 5000 RPM after...

    Gelcoat Restoration

Thanks for your input. I have read other reviews that agree with your comments about turning yellow, flaking and being very hard to remove. I also have read user reviews that say acetone and/or the MS 60 Sealer Remover sold by the same distributor that sells the Gel Coat Restoration kits works...

    Gelcoat Restoration

Keith, thanks for your input. I think you are probably right that nothing works for long. This year I did no sanding but did do a good wash/scrub down and then buffing and polishing and now after a couple of months the oxidation looks the worst it has ever looked.

    Gelcoat Restoration

A year ago I wet sanded, buffed, and polished my 1988 Spectra 171's heavily oxidized closed bow topside. It looked pretty good for a few weeks but then the oxidation reappeared. I have now found a product on the Internet called MS Gel Coat Restoration (its predecessor was called Vertglas) that I...

    Raystown-Lake-in-PA-Sept-25th-27th

The Schuylkill River flows down from the Poconos through Reading, Pottstown, Norristown, Manayunk and then along the west side of Philly until it joins the Delaware River just northeast of the Philadelphia International airport. Many sections of the river are not navigable with power boats...

    Tachometer Issue

I bit the bullet last year and had a new CDI original style water cooled regulator/rectifier installed in my Evinrude and it is still working this year. Hopefully it will continue to work for many years. :bigthumb:

    Raystown-Lake-in-PA-Sept-25th-27th

We are getting a little bored with our six mile run here on the Schuylkill River so are considering trailering our 1988 Evinrude powered Spectra 171 to Raystown Lake for a weekend this fall. Our boat, although in excellent mechanical and electrical condition, is older, smaller, and probably not...

    Gear Grind/Clunk

Finally a day with no rain and some free time so I took my boat out today to test the advice I received from redstrat and JW. First I tried just pushing the shift lever straight into gear. The result was no gear grind and a very slight noise, almost not even a clunk. Then I checked the idle rpm...

    Gear Grind/Clunk

Thanks redstart, I wasn't aware that easing into gear is not good. From now on I will push it straight into gear. Also, I will check my idle speed because I think it is set at about 650 rpm. If so I will up it to 750 rpm. Thanks again for the advice.

    Gear Grind/Clunk

I recently disassembled and lubricated the remote control on my Spectra 171 that has a 1988 Evinrude 150 Hp V6 outboard engine because it had become very difficult to use the pull out neutral position and impossible to shift into reverse. What a difference this repair made! All positions of the...

Trip on the Hudson and around Manhattan, Sept 6th

A number of years back we kept our then boat (a Sea Ray 20) at Jack's Neshaminy Marina in Croydon so have experienced boating on the Delaware. Where do you launch your boat when running the Delaware between Trenton and Philly?

Trip on the Hudson and around Manhattan, Sept 6th

We (my wife & I) enjoyed looking at your pictures from yesterdays Manhattan trip. It looked like a really neat outing. Being from the Philadelphia area we have used the Staten Island ferry many times to visit Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty but never have done it the way you did yesterday...

    OMC Remote Control Grinding Noise

Again thanks Bill for all your helpful input. I plan to remove the remote control unit from my boat after the boat is out of the water at the end of the boating season, sometime in October. Over the winter months I then plan to rebuild it or lube it as needed to get rid of the grinding noise. I...

    OMC Remote Control Grinding Noise

Bill, thank you for taking the time this afternoon to discuss my remote control problem with me. Now after looking at the unit again I see, as you said, there is a black cover on the bottom of the unit that holds the cables in place. When I remove this cover and the cables drop down I assume I...

    OMC Remote Control Grinding Noise

Jim, since I do want to take the unit apart on a bench your input about disconnecting the cables at the motor is helpful, thanks. MarineEngines.com is my normal motor reference site but for some reason it shows a remote control unit that is different than what is installed in my 1988 boat. The...
