HOW FAST IS YOUR CHECKMATE? EVERYONE!

Sorry I've been away for a bit. Yes I did check compression. It was even and over 105 but under 112 Cold. The engine had good power for a 175, and ran like new.

    1987 Mercury v225 2.5l ??

Thanks guys. Still no serial #. He's not returning my emails anymore so it's likely either sold or he was trying to put something over on me. I know about the laser 220's, the early 80's crank rated 2.4 225's, and of course the 2.4 200 carbs (had two of them). I know nothing of the other 2.4...

    1987 Mercury v225 2.5l ??

By the way John, if you see a reasonably priced pro max in our neck of the woods please let me know! I think my exciter would be a mean boat with one of those.

    1987 Mercury v225 2.5l ??

I don't know, sorry. I'm far away from the motor and the seller hasn't responded to my second email asking for clarification. I'll post it as soon as I get that info. If I get it. Thanks

    1987 Mercury v225 2.5l ??

Hi, hopefully this is the right place to ask this. I'm interested in buying a 225hp Mercury and one came up at a good price, I just don't know what it is! The add says rebuilt 1987 Mercury v225. I asked the owner for some clarification and he told me this is a 1987 carburated, prop rated 225hp...

    Speed vs stability?

Hey I was just reading your post and figured I'd chime in with my .02 $ I'm copying much of this from an email I just wrote a buddy on the same topic. I'm speaking generally here, and I could totally be misinformed about some of these points but all of my research and seat time backs up what I'm...

3.0 vs 2.5l 225 vs something else? on a checkmate Exciter

Yea any 2.4/2.5 merc would be fine as far as weight but the only version of one of those id really be interested in repowering with would be a 225pm. That'd be my first choice! I'm just trying to think of all the options out there that would give me 225(ish) user friendly hp and not weigh my...

3.0 vs 2.5l 225 vs something else? on a checkmate Exciter

A quick search shows the 3.0 merc would weigh about 460lbs the 2.5 efi on there now is 408 or 416lbs (can't remember exactly) and the carbed 2.6 yamaha is about 425lbs. I just don't want to deal with more low speed porpoising.

3.0 vs 2.5l 225 vs something else? on a checkmate Exciter

Still away from my boat so I'm Just spitballing here but what do you guys think of a 2.6l yamaha to repower an exciter? I'm pretty sure it don't want the weight of a 3.0l merc on an exciter, and a promax would be fantastic but they are pricey and non-existent around my parts. Correct me if I'm...

HOW FAST IS YOUR CHECKMATE? EVERYONE!

First time I've posted in a thread like this. 88' exciter with a 97' 175 efi. 5.5" setback on a manual jack plate, prop shaft about 1.5" below the pad and a 2:1 lower with nose come (just a spare until my 1:1.87 is rebuilt). 25p laser II. Best I've seen is 62.7 mph gps with this lower unit. I'm...

    New Boat, need help

I should add that at some point in the future I'm considering repowering my exciter with a heavier motor and I may also choose to relocate my battery, so I'm quite curious to see if you feel it's worth it. Happy boating!

    New Boat, need help

Hi. Just a word of warning, weight further up will help with hole shot and low speed planing but can actually make high speed handling worse! If you're mount the battery up front maybe do it under the passenger side of the bow to counteract your weight in the driver seat? Great looking boat...
