1975 V-Mate II Restore

After a few hours of sleep and some discussion, I finally decided to hit it with a wet sanding. I started with 2000 but it didn't eve seem to do much so we kept going down until we hit 600. When I spoke with Interlux, they recommend starting with 400 but that seemed too aggressive. This is the result after a 400 wetsand. I still need to hit it with the finer grits.

As mentioned earlier, the paint doesn't have a high gloss finish so I will follow up with Interlux Brightsides on the sides. I don't know if its the results of improper spraying or not sanding enough or what but the finish just seems blotchy for a lack of a better term. The sheen seems inconsistant.

Now it feels like you are accomplishing something.

Brian will probably have better info than I, but the blochy finish may
be from an uneven spray application, heavier where you overlapped
your spray pattern and thinner in between.

Does Interlux give you the option of 2 coats close together just as it starts to flash, or do you have to let it cure, wet sand and then recoat?

You may just get a few weeks of boating this season if you can keep this pace.

Mike, it is looking real good.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's from the uneven spray also, especially since I've never sprayed before. This weekend, I'm going to add one more coat of this paint (Interlux VC Performance Epoxy) to the bottom using the roll and tip method to see if I get better results.

The can said to recoat after 4 hours or 24 hours. The sanding time was 12 hours so I assumed after 4 hours that I should just reapply and after 24 I would need to sand.

I also picked up my interior today from the factory. I think it turned out looking sharp. I'll post pictures on my next update this weekend.

Sometimes if your compressor doesn't have a large enough tank
the pressure will drop below the regulator setting and it will change the spray pattern.

I hope the final coat goes on to your satisfaction. Let me know how you make out.

Glad to hear the interior turned out to your satisfaction. I was completely
satisfied with mine. The price was right and the service was prefect. Now, the rubrail, that was a different story.

Mike, Looks like its "striped"???? If so, it is the result of the spray pattern being to narrow. What will work good for you is if you have it sanded down so its smooth, mix it 1:1:1 (paint:hardner:laquer thinner) It will spray down smooth and have a good shine. You will want tip pressure around 35-40psi. It must be smooth before going over it or it will magnify what is there with every additional coat. Thinning it down will decrease coverage but since you have a good base already, it will work out great. The bad thing is I am doing the PT thing in flordia now and can not be in ohio for a while to help.
If you got any questions, give me a buzz @ 513-520-1020 and I can try and help you through them. I will be back on the road tomorrow afternoon to chat

Thanks Brian & JT. I did a lot of wet sanding this past weekend and that took out most of the "striping".

I've been pretty apprehensive with this paint but it's starting to look better although I think the directions on the can to sand with 80 grit was a little aggressive, especially for spraying. The nice thing is everything except the hull between the chines will be primed and Brightsides will be rolled on in the near future.

I've got a little more sanding to do before finishing up and I think I'm good to go to flip the boat next weekend to start work on the topside. I need to replace my bunks for the special occasion and ditch the astroturf bunks that's on there now.

Mike,

Lookin real good. My seats are identical in shape just the red and black
strips. When you put those in place, you are going to feel real good.

Jim

Can I get your opinion?

I have some questions about a possible restore I am looking into. Someone told me to look you up and when I did, I was shocked at the progress you made so far on your v-mate II. Nice work! I was wondering if you could look at the pictures i upoaded and see if you can spot any problems with the boat I am looking at to restore. :poke: Any advice would be greaty appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Sorry for not responding...I tend to hibernate during the winter months. It looks as though you found your answers in another thread. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Just looked this over again Mike , Ill be sure ill be looking at it more soon as the Vmate gets home . I repaired part of the trimate floor today . Ill finish it up tomorrow . Than ill probably take it back up to the lake this up coming weekend and maybe bring home the Vmate . Maybe if the weather doesnt get in the way AGAIN .

I don't really have an update on my boat. My wife wanted to update our bathroom so a full renovation took place over the winter. Luckily, the bathroom is complete and now I'm just waiting for warmer weather to start the the finishing stages prepping and painting the topside. I'm optimistic that this boat will finally see water this year.

Getting into the water this years sounds like it is time for a BIG party
after all the work you have put into your project.

Then it is time to get a bigger Checkmate and start all over again ! JK

Something tells me you have had enough work already and it is time to
enjoy.

Hopefully she does get to see the water this summer . Maybe we can get together at some point . Maybe the Saginaw river or something ..... :surf:

I'd love to come up for the Saginaw Run...just hope I can make the deadline. I wanted to come up last year but life threw me a curve ball on those plans.

Yep, definitely ready to enjoy this boat rather sweating my junk off with the restoration. If I ever decided to do this again, I'd go smaller as there's less fiberglass to sand and paint. :sssh:

We will figure something out Mike . I am really planning on having my Vmate I done by summers end but we will see . But ill still have the Trimate and she is always ready for something ......

I've been working on the boat about a month now and thought it was time to update this thread with the progress...

Bottom of my gas tank platform. The blocks were glued on so I'll be able to screw the gas tank in place with the proper mounting brackets.

IMG_4445.jpg
Filler boards that will go between the gas platform and the already installed deck. Should probably be one piece but I'm trying to use up my scrap wood.

IMG_4442.jpg
Braces for the filler boards.

IMG_4444.jpg
This will be glassed in so I can mount my battery tray.

Floor being glued in.
