+3 mph

Thanks, Dave. Yeah, I'm gettin' happy for sure. It's been alot of work so far. Here's a complete run down on all the prop/engine height testing I've done so far.

Prop Testing Data
18’ Checkmate Exciter 2.0 Liter 150 HP Mercury Outboard
Engine height @ 5 ¾” below/Setback of 10”:

23" Stiletto Advantage III (14 1/4 X 23 ) that was repitched and etched w/"22P" on the side:5300 RPM @ 60 MPH. Weak hole shot, but has netted the best speed to date....

Engine height @ 5” below/Setback of 10”

21" Laser II: 5900 RPM@ 59.5?? MPH. Seems to "slip" a lot and will blow out w/ANY steering input at speed.

21" Trophy Plus: 5800 RPM@ 57 MPH. Fantastic hole shot. Great handling.

Engine height @ 4 ¼” below/Setback of 10”–Water pressure is 14psi @WOT

21" Trophy Plus: 5800 RPM@ 57 MPH. Still a good hole shot. Still good handling.

Engine height @ 4 ¼” below/Setback of 10”–Water pressure is 14psi @WOT

21” Stiletto Advantage (14 1/4 X 21 ): Never tested.

****Added adjustable Jackplate and Genuine Mercury water pump kit*********

Engine height @ 1” below/Setback of 9.5” – Water pressure is 16 psi @WOT

22” Mercury “Big Ear” Chopper: 6150 RPM @ 63 mph Acceptable holeshot w/decenet stability @ speed and decent handling. Could handle more pitch.

23” Mercury Temptest: 5900 rpm @ 64-65 mph. Decent holeshot and pretty stable @ speed. Good handling. Bigger rooster tail than the Merc 22” Chopper.

jamie pm 'd ya bk congrats on the progress and the mph :bigthumb:! ! i cant find the time to put on my h2o psi gauge n swap my tach

Must do's my friend. Gotta have h20 psi info to know "when to say when" if you planning on maxing engine height. I'm wondering about your tach readins, as well, based on your running of the Laser II @ 64mph (gps) @ 5800-5900 rpm. That don't add up unless your 18 footoer is about 500 lbs or more less than mine and beings it's a BR, I kind of doubt it. Keep digin' dude. I pm'd you my # if'n you wanna chat about it.

i agree 100% ! most of my speed runs are very short blasts w/ wife n baby 2 wks ago it had to be ! gd n bad she loves the boat ,but not always the wot ! lol ! i'll try to get amore accurate reading next time out seasons winding down up here ! the dumb part for me ive had the h2o gauge since beginning of july

Demo??? I like demo's..... :)

You really think I could spin up a 25" four blade with my lil stock "peanut" motor? I am surprised I was able to turn the 23" Tempest close to 5900 rpm. Have you tested a 23" Tempest and the 25" Turning Point back to back? If so, what kind of rpm/speed difference was noted.

Haha! Yeah, I finally got a lil roost kickin'. Ain't nuthin' like iLLMATTic's 80 mph roost, mind you. I'm thinking that 9.5" of setback is making 1" below the pad comparable to 3" below the pad on a boat with the mota bolted on the transom. Maybe I'm wrong. Just speculation, of course. It still looks cool.

I need to take some updated pics and get some footage in action soon. I've just been on the water testing improvements alone lately, though.

Was that a 23" Tempest or a TempestPlus? If it is a Plus, you can turn the 25" 4 blade. If it's not a + you can't. Let me know. boatman

OK, That is not a + so you would not be able to run the 25" TP 4 blade. If you run the same engine height as the Tempest with this prop, you would only turn around 5400 rpm's. You are still welcome to try it if you want. You just have to pay the shipping and get it back to me safe. boatman

That's a great offer. I really appreciate it, too. If Turning Point comes out with the 4 balde in a 23" version I will take you up on the offer.

any more testing lately? Im looking at your info and kinda comparing it to my boat.

20 foot enchanter
150 xr4
Just midsection drilled to relieve exhaust
6 inch hydro jackplate
bobs lwp and nose cone
24 pitch laser 2----43 mph gps (something wrong) 5800 rpm
24 pitch big ear chopper 57 mph gps screaming at 6200 rpm.

I am thinking that I would like to try a 25 pitch chopper, or a 25 pitch tempest, or.....anyone with any info would help.

I would like to try a larger pitched prop to lower my rpm but keep the speed.

Funny you ask. My daughter and I just got back from a couple of hours out on the water. She had her first gymnastics competition today so we went out to eat lunch afterwards and I then asked her what she wanted to do this afternoon since it was just she and I. Imagine my delight when she said "take me for a boat ride"!!! My girl!!

I had just fixed my trim pump and had a new prop to test. A 23" Trophy Plus four blade. Here's the numbers and a comparison to the 21" Trophy Plus I had ran prior. Besides the prop, there is a significant engine height difference to consider when looking at these numbers, however. With the 21", I was at 4 1/4" below the pad. With the 23", I am now @ 1" below the pad.

Engine height @ 4 ¼” below/Setback of 10”–Water pressure is 14psi @WOT

21" Trophy Plus: 5800 RPM@ 57 MPH. Still a good hole shot. Still good handling.

Engine height @ 1” below/Setback of 9.5” – Water pressure is 16 psi @WOT

23” Mercury Trophy Plus: 6150 rpm @59-60 mph.

I was surprised that I was spinning the 23 @6150, but was even more surprised, or disappointed that it struggled to hit 60 mph.

I may have to take Boatman up on his offer to test that 25" Turning Point 4 blade. I just can't imagine being able to spin that much wheel w/my 'lil 2.0 liter peanut motor on a fairly heavy 18' hull. The Tempest is still the fastest prop I have ran @ 65 mph and only 5900 rpm.

I was reading through your thread, too. Some have mentioned the 150 not being enough power. I can relate and agree with them. You (I) need about 200 hp or more to start cookin. I also couldn't help but think that maybe your bigest liability might be weight. Have you checked your boat good. Is it maybe holding water in the floatation or something? Have you ever weighed it?

*note* All speeds documented are from a luiqi-meter. Not GPS figures. I still haven't ran the wires to my newly installed 12V power port... :(

No I have never weighed it before. I dont know what my boat should even weigh..but mine is a 20 foot enchanter..so its a little deeper I believe, and its got that hump right before the window to which probably adds weight..but that is a small motor on my boat, I think I am going to try to find a 225 promax or I know a guy that builds motors, he has a 260 sitting on his bench right now he is thinking about sellin, hes got 2 280s a 2.5 150 mariner mag a 175 and about 3 other motors looking to sell..

have you ever tryed a balistic prop? I would love to try a tempest prop on my boat, or even a 4 blade chopper ET, or a ron hill 4 or 5 blade chopper..

The ballistic is a great prop as long as you dont have a jack plate. They need to be run deep at all times. But a very good all round prop.
