80 mph

ok, so I have this awesome machine for 8 yrs now...i have always gps at 68 mph.
How do i get her to 80mph?...So far we have a stock 1983 2 stroke 200 merc with 48-23p ss prop, 1981 21 ft checkmate enchanter, land and sea 2 inch? set back jack plate....time to modify what?...10 inch set back jack plate?...new prop?, would love to get 80 mph....:sssh:

I'm not the OB guy, there are others who know alot more then I do but, I don't think anyone has a older 200hp O/B on an Enchanter going 80mph. Start looking for a bigger motor, the merc 3.0 liter motors can get you there. I think you will need at least 250HP and 10" of set back. Then you can tune in the last few mph.

It won't be cheap, but speed never is.
 
Hate to say it but your probably going to need more HP to hit 80.
Best improvement for speed is going to be more setback. I was running a 200hp Evinrude 8" setback and 72 was all I could get and I was 2' shorter. Im at 10" setback now with a 225HO (247hp)and am at a tad over 80 now. Not saying it cant be done but ..............
 
There's no replacement for displacement. You're going to need at least a 225 Pro XS and a lot of set back. I'd go with a 250 Pro XS or 250 XS and just slam dunk it. But if you're going to go that far you might want to consider going all the way and just trading your boat for one that will go 80. You might be A LOT of dollars ahead.

ok, good info. Since im not going to get a new boat anytime soon....and this one is solid, maybe Ill do 12" set back and hope for 75mph. How about a different prop?
 
To be reallistic, a 2100 Pulsare struggles to break 70 with a 200. It takes a very good set up. Most are in the mid to high 60's. With a 20' boat and a strong motor, you may get close to 75, but you may not. My first Cmate was a 2100 with a 200 efi, radar 66mph. it took alot of time and effort to get 70 with the stock motor. You are at 68, so you have a good start.
 
Sorry about that, I didn't mean to sound discouraging. Increase the set back, if you can get the motor and revs high enough, maybe you can step up to a 25P.
 
Here's an idea, it doesn't cost much go above water exhaust.

If you can't hit 75-80, at least you can sound cooler than all the quiet motors.
 
My dad had an 85 Enchanter with a 2.4 200 running 75mph of GPS here's the setup:

Stock Block
Shaved Head's down to around 150lbs of compression (Still run 93octane pump gas)
Cross Drilled Intake
WH-22 Carbs withe 80-82 Main Jets
Chris Carson Poly-Glass Reeds
6" Manual Jack-Plate Running about 3"-3.5" below the pad. (If I were to do it over I would go 10")
25p Mercury Trophy Prop
 
set back and a couple tryes with different props you will get better speed maybe exhoust tunner some reeds and fly wheel you might wake her up a lil bit :surf:
 
its all good, Sam I am,...so try 48-25p...ok. I think im goin to get 10" set back, I have a land and sea jack plate on it now, should I just add it too the new set back?(save some bucks)? Looks like i will have to do something with the steering cables, or should I get hydrolic steering? and where would i get the best price for that? How about the trim lines? is there a kit?
I just rebuilt the floor and went through this boat, she is in awesome shape, and i love to wrench. How about punchin out the motor i have?...or is a two stroke a dinosaur?
 
Thanks all!...is there any down fall to above water exaughts? and does it help on hp?
ill start with 10 inch jack plate and some intake and exaught work....heads were shaved...ill have to check compression...
 
Opening up the exhaust will help some on top end, but will hurt a little on bottm end. 2strokes thrive on a combination flow and back pressure if that makes any sense. No back pressure, no bottom end, no flow volume, no top end. It is a delicate balance! But on the other hand, anything you do to increase the horsepower, will increase the rpm range. There is 1 exception, increase the size of the engine. More cubic inches takes less rpm's to make power. For comparison, look at the rpm range of a 3.0 200 Optimax, then compare it to a 250hp 3.0. More horse's, more rev's.
 
is there a thread on how to open the exaught?....and what about my set back...have a land and sea jack plate...should I just add a manual 10 inch set back to what i have?
 
Leave the engine alone,, if you can not gain speed threw set up on a O/B get a bigger engine. Hop ups on a O/B most of the time never turn out good in the long run.

Come on guys tell this guy the truth :lol:
