Adding setback to my Pulsare.

JUPITER PULSARE

Well-known member
It's been a while since I've tinkered with my Pulsare setup. I've run the boat both with 5.5" on the Jackplate and with 2" spacers for a total of 7.5". The boat handled better with the 2" spacers. I'm now going to add a Stainless Marine 8" setback bracket which will give me 13.5" of setback. I can add my Bob's 2" spacers for 15.5" of setback. I'm running a Trophy Plus 26, gearcase scoops, Hyd Steering, Hyd Jackplate. Boat runs consistant low/mid 70's with full tank/two adults. (and that's with my stock, mild mannered, fishing motor!) It should be interesting to see what happens!!!

that's about right, 15" isn't that big of a deal, I have seen boats with well over 20" of setback. My starflite has 13.5" and could use more but i would need longer steering cables to do it. Setback = good on these boats, the bow is heavy.

Like I said in the other thread....DO IT!!!

ALL OF IT!!! 15"

It is warm where you are, give us cold weather freaks something to read about.

Did I mention DO IT?:bounce:

I personally have the Stainless marine jack and 7" setback (looks like a piece of art intergrated with the Merc) To date no problems with transom but I would like to inform you the some Stainless Marine products incorporate a negative trim aspect. My 7" setback has 4 degrees negaative trim built in. In most cases I don't notice this unless I am loaded heavey or going for the last ounce of trim on a top end run . Daily I find my self almost trimed all the way in with the family aboard @ 30 mph

jupiter, how does the 26 trophy take off on your boat? how far is the prop below bottom of boat? how much does it tach at wot? thanks.

also, i only have an 18.5 ft eluder but when i went from a 6 to a 10 jackplate the ride was terrible and lots of porposing. went back to a 6 and speed was same and my good ride was back.

The 26 Trophy has great holeshot. With my current setup my propshaft is about 2" below the pad and I'm spinning in excess of 6000rpm. The porposing you experience could have been caused by an imbalance in the setback and prop choice. You change the leverage point when adding setback and you need to compensate by changing props/motor height. I'll keep you posted on my progress once I do the install.

I'm runnin' 18" w/o a problem.

I can see you passing 95mph this coming season with more seat time and setup. My goal (for the time being) is to have the fastest stock 225 Pulsare. I've seen GPS speeds above 75 MPH with my current setup. If I could hit 80mph with a stock 225 I'd be very happy!

do you think a 26" trophy plus on my eluder would be a better choice than a 25" tempest plus. i have a chance to get either of these at a decent price. i have a 98 200 efi on my boat and with a 24' turbo 3 blade it takes off like a rocket. just doesnt have as good of speed as i want. the turbo slips so i have to tun the engine lower. with one of these props i can raise it and get the most out of it.

Setback definitely makes a difference! The blue 24 Checkmate with 12" setback, 25" Trophy prop, and a 300xs, ran a best of 73.4 mph.

The yellow 24 with the same prop and motor, but 18.5" of setback ran 77.6 mph. Look at the wetted bottom area in the two pics! The blue 24 was run in 60 degree December weather and the yellow 24 was in 90 degree July temps. The extra setback help carry the bow. Too much trim actually slows the boat down though.

Notice how high the yellow 24 rides with the extra setback.

I'm not sure if the Eluder has a V or pad bottom. I would lean more towards the Trophy Plus 26. I have a Tempest Plus 25 and it's the most ill handling prop I've ever tried on my Pulsare. The Blade area on the Tempest is so large that it trys to force any light boat on it's side thereby inducing chine walk. Once my Tempest Plus 25 hit about 65 MPH, I can no longer control the boat. My Trophy Plus really performs well right into the low/mid 70's. If you're going to raise you motor, keep a close eye on water pressure. If you don't have low water pickups, get some gearcase water scoops to help retain water pressure as you raise the motor.

Randy, with my 21' Pulsare I have the opportunity to run my Bob's Jackplate 5.5" with my Stainless Marine 8" setback for 13.5" of setback. I also have Bob's 2" spacers which would bring me to 15.5" of setback. Would you run with or without the spacers????

thanks Jupiter, i have a 25 tempest on the way and have my eyes on a 26 trophy as well. i am going to test both. i also have water scoops, and engine is 2" below pad now. also, my eluder has about an 8" pad under it. it has always been an easy boat to drive. never chine walked at all. thanks.

I think you'll find the Trophy is the better choice after running both props. Let me know how things work out!
