You are doing an excellent job. I can't wait to see the paint job and for you to start rebuilding. Just curious to know if you are using poly or epoxy? Good luck!

i have the exact same boat think mine is an 1980 and it is the same color as well hate it lol... just wodering how you been coming along on this and if you plan to paint it soon or not....I thinking of going black and gold on mine with the metal flake in the gold...I live in Louisiana lol....very good job so far I have removerd the floor out on mine so far as well but i have not removed the top and think my transum is fairly good still but the foam boxes are shot....

I did decide to go ahead and paint. I got the first coat on today and will be putting on the second tomorrow. I'm going with an all with with gray accents. My wife is happy to see the "late 70's early 80's disco theme" go away.

After talking with the local boat shops, they suggested the Brightsides Poly. Since the boat is trailered and will be fresh water, they say it is the best choice. I spent two days prepping and priming. The first coat of white went on the hull today. So far I'm pleased and cant' wait to get the second coat on tomorrow. I'll try and get some photos up as well.

please do get some pics and describe what you done very interested lol...i am leaving the gold i think and painting the brown black.... I hoping i can make the gold shine again plus that leave some metal flake on the boat too... with a high glos black and the metal flake like burgandy material i got forthe seat covers should look sharp as hell... I really want to see how well yours turns out... I am going to try the roll and tip method on mine.... I done a lot of research on it and prob the best way for a do-it yourselfer to get a quality look and using the same brand as you....

Trailer's done

I finished welding up the trailer, took care of the rust, and gave it a coat of paint. I also put on new rollers and gave the bunks new carpet. I had a can of rustoleum aluminum color in the garage, so that's what it got. I plan to get some diamond plate and put on the new steps.

Hull painted

I also finished painting the hull. All in all I'm pretty happy with the tip and roll painting. It came out pretty darn good. I spent two days prepping. I filled in all dings and primed it with the Interlux primer. After the primer dried, I sanded it to a transparent coating as the directions said. '

The first coat went on well. After coat one dried, I sanded it with 320 grit as directed and gave it the second coat. The second coat looks really good. It has a nice shine a smooth feel. I will probably give the side wall a third coat.

Looks like a new boat. Amazing how good it is looking compared to what it looked like just a few months ago! Keep up the good work.

Careful on the trailer poles, they like to eat the paint off the side of the boat. I took a piece of sch 40 PVC (3" I think) and cut it in half. When I launch and load I slide them over the poles and it provides an amazing amount of protection for the finish. Plus pull them off while trailering so they don't stick up 5' in the air.

Now I'm kinda' second guessing my decision to just repair the dings and scratches in my gelcoat. Oh well, too late now.

Thanks. I was thinking of going down to the local buggy shop and picking up some padding that the use on roll bars to put over the poles.

love the stand up kawasaki jet ski i have two lol....i see that toy in the back ground... i rool and tip that too lol.. I going to say bud that turned out very sharp how much money you have in materials so far to paint hwat you did and what you think it will cost to finish the top? also when doing the interior look up a product called sandi-tred... what i think i will use... no carpet and will make it all water proof.... tell me what you think

I thought about painting the floor. I plan to add a ski locker which was not originally in the boat and wanted to paint that area. I checked out the sani-tred website and it looks like pretty good stuff.

For the DIYer's on budget the roll and tip is the way to go, so easy a cave man can do it!!! Nice job GL. I've got five coats on the sides and gunnells, but that's because I'm wetsanding and buffing in a few weeks.

I had a busy couple of days. I got the new transom built and glassed to the hull. I used two sheets of 3/4" to make the transom and legs laminated together using PL. Having the old transom still in one piece really made the job easy. I only had a little shaping to do. It's almost a shame that it won't be seen as it's a pretty darn good looking piece of wood.

I also got the initial stringers in place. Again, I used 3/4" ply. This section is 8' long and will be the ski locker. I'm thinking of making a dual cover for the locker for easy access.

Next up, I will finish the rear section of the stingers and then start measuring and planning for the floor. Also, I be able to get the fiberglass on the front of the transom.

wow looks good so far when you are done need to post the rough cost break down so i can figure what i going to spend doing mine.... how big a motor do you think yours will support ow when you are done....i got an evinrude 235 with manual jack plate and hyd steering... i was planning to put on mine till i can find a better motor..... boat factory is rated 200 hp so i figure if i redo the transum and beef it up as well i should be good.....

I guess it's been a while since I posted my progress. I've been a bit busy (as we all are), but I've gotten quite a bit done. The end of fiberglassing came about a month ago. THAT was a joyful day! And the painting is pretty much done as well. The floor and transom are completely glassed, sanded and the carpet is installed.

I just realized I don't have picts of the carpet, but once you've seen carpet, you've seen carpet. I opted for gray carpet that I ordered from Home Depot. They were having a special and I ended up with twice as much carpet as I needed and it was still cheaper than anywhere else that had marine carpet. I also painted all non-carpet areas with Interlux bilge paint.

So here's how the floor turned out.

I'm pretty happy with how the paint turned out. The roll and tip method worked well. It's definitely not a professional spray looking job, but I like it. Once I got all the white on it definitely need some color. At first I was going to go simple and put on a gray strip only, but the Brightside gray looked too battleship like to me, so I went with something brighter.

I started with a yellow stripe on the deck. The yellow flowed very well and looked nice. Then I gave the hull a sapphire blue. That led to the decision to carry the blue on up onto the deck. Then I widened the yellow stripe so it would stand out a bit. In then end I have to say it looks pretty good. My wife likes it, and that always helps. The only downside is that We live in the San Diego area and now anyone who sees it says, "Hey, it a Chargers boat!"

Since these picts were taken I have polished and waxed the paint. Seeing that I am not a painter I was too scared to even think about wet sanding. So I opted to buff it with Aqua-Buff. The Aqua-Buff brought out the shine and evened up the paint pretty well. I then put on 2 coats of 3M marine wax.

Parts

Just out of curiosity, where did the part I circled in your photo come from? When I got my boat from the previous owner these were just lying under the dash and I never could figure out where they were supposed to go. (Not that I'm planning on reusing them, it's just always bugged me wondering where they went).
