Barn Roof fell on my Starliner!!!

Yeah, thanks Big Red. - what stinks is that I just tossed the cover over it to keep the dust off. So I'm not sure how much good it's doing right now.

Just got a call from my "barn buddy" and the insurance co now wants some quotes so they can start the settlement. Finally something I can do to move it along. I'm already at the point where having the boat functional for memorial day will be tight depending on the damage. I'm going to post something in the dock to see if anyone has any good builders in that area that would be interested in rebuilding that thing -- the right way.

Jim (the guy who took those pics) said the same thing - that it was very underbuilt - he joked that the upside is that at least it's less wood to move off of the boat. The pitch of that roof was also not what I thought it should have been in that area.

The other 2 guys will just take the losses on their boat and go buy new. I don't have that kind of green (nor do a want something new).

I wonder how many winters that shed has been through? Rotten building practice. Anyway, if you make the trip out here to Lakeside, let me know. We'll hook-up for a rip through our little local lake in the Persuader (if i'm not in the middle of working on it) and maybe grab a beer along the way!

OUCH

I hope everything works out for the best ( think that is everyone's worst nightmare )

Needafunboat,

Looking at the picures the failure occured in the roof trusses at the connection of the top, bottomand web members at nailing plates. Depending on the age of the pole barn you should be able obtain the engineering report of the truss design from the city. Slope of roof really doesn't matter if the trusses were designed for the proper snow load of the region. If you want to discuss this give me a call at my office (248)398-3539. If this was a failure in truss design you may have recourse against the engineer of record who signed and sealed the truss drawings for the manufacturer for the damages to the structure and contents. Per State of Michigan trusses are a pre-engineered system and MUST be signed and seal by a Michigan Licensed Engineer and submitted to the city for permit/ inspections.

that is EXACTLY what i was thinking:irked:;):bigthumb:

What I didn't see was any cross members at the bottom cords tying the trusses together. Which means as they began to deflict they did not work together. By not bracing them they would twist applying a lateral load to the nailing plates forcing them to pop off. Then again the pic's were of just a small section of the tursses.

Remilinger,

Thanks alot for the info! It looked pretty poorly made to me, but I'm no expert.

Since the home owner's and my boat insurance are going to cover it, I'm not sure I want to stir anything up. In addition, I don't even own the barn so I just want it done.

I'll probably be bugging you when the owners rebuild to double check the plans.

Thanks-

Talked to Kary

So I talked to Kary for a while tonight and wow - do I feel alot better about things now. Very nice, knowledgeable guy who sounds like he does it because he honestly likes what he's doing.

He could also fit me in pretty quickly which is cool. He couldn't have been a nicer guy. Unfortunately he didn't have any pics of his work (computer crash). Does anyone have any pics of boats he's done?

I called checkmate and they recommended Kevin Brown at lakeshore in OH. I haven't talked to him, but he's really the only other guy I'd consider.

Has anyone had any experiences with either of these guys - I'd guess they are both top-notch. Feel free to PM me if you want.

Thanks,
Anthony

Kary is were I stored my starflite this winter.Just a C-note for indoor storage. He is nice and extremly fair.He was going to freshen up my 2.5 thru the winter, but due to my new kitchen I didn't have the funds.I do have to call and get in touch with him.Good Luck and get in ASAP!

hey anthony, havent talked to you for a while.im sorry to hear the bad news. hopefully things turn out for the better. keep me posted. best of luck to you man:(

Hi Cody,

Thanks for the good thoughts. Yeah, it will turn out OK, one way or another. Right now the frustrating part is not being to get to the boat - and not being able to crack open my friends barn until he settles up with AAA insurance (going on 3 months). We'll see - maybe Ross and I will be in there cutting stuff up in a few weeks.

I almost sent this to you a while back and then just forgot. I'm not sure who this is, but I think he's on the board. I was trying to talk my buddy into a diplomat and was telling how quick the old sporty was (same hull). I really liked that boat.

she's coming out... I hope

Well they cut up the roof and now ALL of the snow is now down in the barn and about 5 feet of it on the boat - Yeah, they have that much snow up there still. My boat actually looks worse now with all of the snow, but the roof is off of it. The one owner dug his little jet boat and out and... then told me he's leaving tomorrow and not even giving me a hand! Upside is that his boat looked worse than mine is is just about totally fine.

The other owner (who thinks I have to pull his pontoon out to get to my boat) told me that he's... just not planning on coming up. What he doesn't realize is that I can cut a few boards out and get my boat straight out without moving his boat. But he doesn't care... he'll let it sit all spring until it melts and just go buy another.

So it's kind of coming to every man for himself. Oh, and no mention of any rental refund - well, I mean I guess technically it was in storage, just under a bunch of snow - right??

One buddy of mine is coming up with me and we should be able to get it out on sat. The problem is that there is about a foot of ice in the bottom of the barn so I have to get the trailer out of that! It should be doable, but it will be some work.

ANYONE WANT TO HELP DIG A BOAT OUT IN WATERS, MI (just south of Gaylord). Don't you worry Ross - I'll be giving you a personal groveling call for help!

I would come help, but I fear for my safety being bent over with a shovel in a town called GAYLORD.

who took the barn roof off? also we have lost alot of snow this week-i had about 2-3 foot on my front yard and it is all gone:bigthumb:you got my number anthony so give me a call and i would be glad to stop by. are you talking saturday as in tomarow? let me know-ross

Glad to hear things are finally moving! Bout time! Bugger about the dude who owns the building and the pontoon dork. I'd help myself to his anchor and life jackets if he's gonna let everything sit ;-)

some good wisdom there red, tell me you didn't learn that the hard way !

No I have not learned the hard way, but I believe in some of the old wives tales I hear. And I also have been raised and been told " Boy if its not right or you have a funny feeling you better run and never look back " Not knocking anybody but I would move if I lived in a town called GAYLORD or any other town that sounds like a HOMOVILLE. Just my worthless 02 coming from your typical REDNECK.
