**Checkmate Resumes Production**

2ton, I don't have a pony in this dog race but I have to side on Wman's side. I believe him when he said he was ripped off of 48K of his hard earned money. From the details I've heard, it's not just a business loss due to bankruptcy but fraud (in my ignorant view). If it was me in Randy's place, I would be shouting out at the top of the world. I cannot stand any (presumed) thief! You're right that the courts will probably have to sort the whole thing out in the end but I do see Randy's frustration.

-I don't think this will hurt Hustler or Checkmate's reputation. Most people do not see DS as Checkmate. I hear Joey L. (new owner) is a stand up guy.

Good luck Randy and I hope you get this resolved.

i dont disagree with wildman on his loss and i am on his side also!!! i want to see Wildman get what he is owed....i dont wanna see people runing around making this into a name calling band wagon. all im suggesting is a little more dignity and tact in the matter. how exactly is shouting from the mountain tops that you got ripped off going to help.....especially when you havnt even given time enough to really let things get sorted out. maybe Wildman has spoke to Doug, checkmate, and hustler.....and they have all told him hes outa luck and to get over it....even still this is an easy slam dunk case for any lawyer and he can get his money back no problem.

we can agree to disagree on a couple points:

1)im just surprised that grown ups feel the need to air their dirty laundry to the public when it is anything but productive and certainly isnt becoming of an adult. but thats just my opinion. running about on an a public forum trashing people and announcing your private affairs isnt something that i would recommend......but to each his own.

2)any derogatory statements about checkmate , prior owners, current employees, or any other scandal involving the brand is BAD FOR BUSINESS. period.

what if Wildman's engines show up tomorrow?????? or his money is refunded??????? then what will all of this bitchin and moanin look like????? you have to leave the door open for things to work out.....

The reality is that nobody on this forum is trashing Checkmate. We are tremendously loyal to the brand and truely want to see Checkmate continue to build great boats:thumb:. The negative comments have been directly aimed at the individual who has misrepresented the company and taken advantage of loyal customers:mad:. I, like many others, had great concerns when I heard Doug Smith was buying Checkmate. I took a back seat, keep my mouth closed and wait and see what happens mentality when this took place:sssh:. For a while it looked like things were progressing nicely at Checkmate...new models, new interiors, inner lined cockpits, etc...but when old Baja molds started being layed up and marketed as Checkmates my blood began to boil:pissed:!!!! As someone who worked in the high performance boat business for many years (Fountain, Velocity, Hustler & Mariah dealership manager/factory rep for Active Thunder Boats) I remember the great growth at Baja and much of the bad Doug Smith history that reared it's nasty head during those times which is why I had doubts about Checkmate's future with Doug Smith at the helm:sick:..I can only hope that with the sale of Checkmate to Hustler, that debts owed to people will be resolved before moneys are turned over to Doug Smith! One day I will be in the position to buy a new Checkmate (besides, I'm getting too old for these renovations! lol) and I would sure like them to still be around when the time comes!!!

No offense 2ton but you talk about dirty laundry and private affairs when there is a 51 page thread over on SF that involved you.

wildman im sorry you have been bamboozled.....and i wish you the best in your efforts to seek compensation.

how you handle the situation is your business and i shoulda just kept my mouth shut.

im in no way defending Doug Smith......i am defending adult discourse and a mature, non emotional and rational course of action to getting wildman what he is owed...... thats all. and i just dont think that name calling is productive. i , like everyone else on here, just want to see the best course of action taken in justice being served for Wildman.

Wildman:

if Doug has told you that he will not pay you....then what was his reasoning behind his refusal to pay? does he insist that Checkmate Inc. is liable as a corporation? whos name is on the check you wrote? have you gotten legal consultation? what does hustler say about the situation?

if your going to air the dirty laundry....then tell us the whole story. maybe we can help in planning a course of action to getting what is owed to you.

lol no offense???? well excuse me but that is offensive...you cant just say "no offense" and then say whatever you like and expect it to be ok.

so offense has been taken.

that fiasco has nothing to do with this and has even less to do with what i am trying to encourage.

the funny thing is this:

I DIdNT START THAT THREAD.

and i sure as hell didnt scam anyone. that is not how i wanted to go about handling my business but when someone goes on a public airway and starts spewing lies i am inclined to a rebuttal.

the fact that you would even bring that up is ridiculous. but im sure that somehow the fact that i was almost scammed myself by a douchebag on scream and fly makes my credibility less than others. sure ok.

but hey im sure that the name calling and bitching will fill Wildmans bank account.....so please....carry on.

You are right your thread has nothing to do with Randy's situation. My point is randy has a right to talk about his situation no matter what you and I think. He's a smart guy and I'm sure he'll handle it.

His reason for not paying is that he says he doesn't have the money. Well, if he paid no bills since way before I sent him the money, and he closed down 2 weeks after, then who's got the money? The money should have gone directly to Mercury as soon as they got it.

my posts were meant to be helpful to Randy, Checkmate, and the members of this forum. having been involved in situations like this before i can tell yo all with absolute certainty that going public with this kind of thing WILL NOT HELP THE SITUATION. and the allowing the conversation to degrade even further down to a laughable level of petty name calling is even more counterproductive to all parties involved.

talking about it, should randy so choose, is his business....its not a good idea from a legal standpoint but his decision none the less. so i am not attempting to sensor him in any way.....just trying to help.

this kind of press is not good for the sport, its not good for the forum, its not good for checkmate, and its not good in the effort to get Randy his money/engines.....so why bother? thats all im saying.

my heart goes out to you randy.....its a tough thing when you get stabbed in the back and ripped off and it makes me angry to hear about your loss.....but a cool head will prevail. speak softly and carry a big stick.....

IF I thought there was any chance in the world that he would do the right thing, I would have kept my mouth shut. Being nice didn't seem to work too well. One of the motors was paid for in April of 2012. The last two were Feb 2013. He has had over a year to make it right.

i totally agree...a year is plenty of time to resolve this kind of thing. has Doug offered you any kind of solution other than getting a judgement against him?

did you buy the engines from "Doug Smith" or did you buy them from "Checkmate"??? i realize that for real world purposes they are the same thing but in the legal realm this fact will be a big deal.

keep in mind....im only trying to be constructive Randy.....we all want justice here....

Is Doug Smith gonna stay on with Checkmate and Hustler? If he is I feel Randy has a chance of resolving the situation. Sad thing is it may take a while. Maybe Randy they while pay you off in boats or blank hulls! Hope it works out.

If I can do anything about it, Doug won't be working at Checkmate anymore! If Doug was there, I can hear it now "Hey Randy, why don't you send me up $60K for that new 24 that you haven't ordered yet. I'll be sure to watch your money for you" I just heard about several others that he screwed for over $30K each.

Send that $60k to me, I've got a 24 on the drawing board.
