Fish/Depth finders??

Can anyone tell me what's a good, but affordable,Depth finder?Just need some idea what's going on belowww! Can you use one of the older b&wscreens? Will they show you what you need to see @40+MPH? Never used one but I've had something slow me down, abruptly,in an area I usually have no problem.

I bought a Humminbird pirahna max 150 from wal-mard for $85 cdn on sale from $100. Shows depth and the fish....good nuff for me. A GPS unit would run you approx $1000 (from what i have found) but you do get alot of goodies for that price. Good companies are Humminbird, Lowrance and Garmin.

http://www.fishfinder-store.com/eagle-cuda-350-s-map-gps-fishfinder-240v-x-160h.html This is what I run on my lil mate. Not at 40+ mph though. lose the screen picture around 25mph. but still reads depth until about 30 or so. Works awsome at slow speeds. I glued my transducer in the back of the boat so I didn't have to put screws in the transom.

Thanks everyone. That Cuda is a GPS also?Maybe the transducer is the reason it don't work at higher speeds.I have some screw holes were the speedo was,I think. So I'll have to look into that also. But that's a good price for both. The store is located about 14miles from my home,so that helps too.Now I'm not sure what I need??:brickwall:I would get a depth sounder, then a GPS w/the minicard. Most important thing is I don't want to run up on a sand bar or what have you..The info about that Cuda says up to 70mph.

I think your right on about my transducer location. Its pretty thick back there I'm sure thats why it dosn't read at higher speeds. I just could not bring myself to drill holes in the back end again after all the transom, floor work and a bad ass paint job. The gps is great, an awsome feature. And the price you can't beat.

I've got that same one but my transducer is mounted on the transom. I'll try the fishfinder at speed the next time I'm out.:thumb:

Thanks Cmpulse I'd like to know if I may have an air buble in the glue.

You can also have an air bubble in the transom. When I had my new transducer installed they told me you had to mount it under the balsa core (to the inside of the outer hull) to insure there were no air bubbles under the transducer. This was a pain in the ass and made the install considerably more expensive than i had planned but oh well. An air bubble willl definitely throw them off.

I use it when I'm putting in waters that I don't know. I always case the area I'm gonna do speed runs through anyway. Then I watch the depth and look for debris floating around, less chance of tearing something up. I think I'll leave the core inside the boat just the way it is. If I'm hooked up speed wise and hit something, chances are the damage is going to be done before I see it on the depth finder. Trust me!! I've hit plenty out there in my younger days, took alot of my beer money away!!
