Is motor to big for my boat?

I was thinking it might be an Exciter. It's the same hull as the Eluder except without the open bow. I'm sure the Exciter will be a little faster because of better aerodynamics. Jon Lamon has an Eluder with a 225 (as I recall) Merc so he'd be a good one to ask about setup. I'm still fighting engine gremlins so don't have nearly as much experience, but I can say with my 200GT on a 6" manual jackplate, Teleflex NFB dual cable steering, prop set at 3" below the pad, and stock engine mounts that my boat's very stable up to 65 mph. If I can ever get the engine straightened out, well then ....

I could run it low 80's. I had to tuck the motor full down to drive it or it was outta control. It only had single cable steering. I think with better steering and a pad bottom, it would be faster and safer. That same motor ran 101 on GPS on an 18ft Liberator.

I'm the guy that had a 1999 Johnson 225h.o. motor on a 1988 Exciter... I went 79.9 with it and 3/4 tank of fuel, small cooler, and my gf onboard. It would run upper 70s any day of the week and was very easy to drive. I set it up right, though. Solid upper and lower motor mounts, seastar pro hydraulic steering with the Allison cylinder, and a 8" manual Jackplate. If you want to know how to setup one of these to run fast easily with a 450lb motor, thats the recipe.

The motor you're talking about will not be as fast because its not making as much power and has a different gearcase. The 99 225h.o. supposedly made 243hp and they came with the lightning gearcase. Your mid will be a problem because I don't think you'll be able to jack it high enough with a single plate- I don't believe that a long mid will negatively affect handling.

My previous motor was a 1989 175hp merc that ran 67 on the 8" jackplate.. there was more left in it if I would have added additional setback, but because I knew that I wanted to put a heavier motor on it I bought a 8" plate.

Imho, if you don't already own the motor, I'd wait and upgrade what you have with a jackplate and dual cable steering.. get running in the 60s for a while, then take the leap... that 150hp motor will run mid 60s if its strong and setup right.

On the other hand, the guy that bought my Exciter hasn't ever owned a boat and within a week he was running 77mph with it- its all in the setup:D

Not to hijack the thread, but i have a similar question regarding my 1992 Checkmate Pulse 185. It currently has a 175 outboard motor that runs the boat about 58 mph. I was looking to find my way to about 65-70mph. What is my best way of doing this?

The boat says it is only safe for a 185hp motor, can a bigger motor be put on the boat safely?

Should i look into a jack plate? The transom on the boat says the warranty is void if a jack plate is used.....i imagine they say that for a reason.....will it hurt the boat? I already have dual steering cables on the boat? Any help is appreciated to get me off in the right direction. The boat is in great condition, the transom is very solid.

Bad Checkmate I have a freind with the same boat 225 EFI merc does around 80 with the right prop. Very stable

80mph would be nice, but i don't need to be there yet. How would i get more speed without replacing the engine, is a jack plate my only option? What is a good or bad jack plate to get?
