My MX-15 (1972?) was an almost identical restore to the project you are documenting here. Rotten transom - rotten floor - no seats - gages were shot - paint was a mess. Did the work in Orangeville, Ontario last year.

I must say the quality of work you have done is much higher than mine was. I am running a Johnson 70 triple and get about 38 MPH. Very fun boat and an eye turner on the lake despite the worst paint job I have seen (Used TSC Farm Implement Enamel and a roller - turned out aweful unless you are into brush strokes and air bubbles - nothing a sander can't fix though!).

PS. Install an automatic bilge pump in the back of the boat - comes with a built in float switch. Also make sure you seal the seams to the two halves towards the back half of the boat as water pours in on corners! I used marine silicone seal - clear. I also found a supplier of the rub rail on line that worked well with the existing aluminum extrusions. My rub rail was rock hard and had to be broken off bit by bit to get to the rivets.

I also found Abbott boats in Sarnia that supplies sot of locally - it;s about an hour away when the snow clears.

I am going with the same bilge I used in my sail boat which is an electronic float contained in the pump body. Basically it senses water outside the pump and turns on accordingly. Pretty cool product and no float switch to maintain :)

I used 220 and 320 grit on the sides and top. Then I used filler to fill in all the holes, chips etc. After that I sprayed primer then sanded with 400 grit. Once that was done the boat was taped up and sprayed three different colors. I used Dupont base coat clear coat products. I started with interlux products and didn't get the look I wanted so automotive paint took it's place. The DuPont paint starts on page five on this link. I happen to have bought this boat off of Robby and I must say the pic's do not do it much justice! Probabaly the best looking boat on the water in north central Indiana if i do say so myself! My only caution is that the automotive paint is not quite as durable as gel.

Also if Robby doesnt have the paint codes i can dig them up for you. I have them somewhere!

Thanks!!! I don't own it anymore sold that boat last year to a member here. I needed a more family friendly boat like a bow rider. Still haven't found that "perfect Checkmate" yet. Here's the paint info:

I went with Awlgrip. I used their fairing product which meant priming before and after fairing. I forget what paper I used for scuffing. I just followed the product information sheet. Looking good Tim :bigthumb:
 
Looking good Tim!!! :thumb:The area on the transom where the splash well was at you'll need to grind the gel coat back then use CSM to build it up. Once that's done sand it smooth then use a marine filler to fill in the uneven spots. You might have to do that multiple times to get a smooth surface. For the lay up back to back is ok with what you're doing. I did the same on the Enforcer transom except mine had three staggered layers. That's before I found out I could've sandwich CSM between the 1708. Anyway always different ways of doing lay ups!!
 
Yep that's the picture I was looking for!! You filled in the transom nicely, all that's needed now is some marine filler to smooth that area out. I would block sand that small area so it's smooth and level. The paint will show uneven areas so you wanna get that as smooth as possible.
