Starflite reassembly

Can anyone tell me what the concrete like material is inbetween the
motorwell and the transom when I drop the cap back down?

I think I read it is a "detroit" brand body filler. Like Matt said any filler will work to "bed" it in there. A lot of people also use PL adhesive.

While I like the PL for bonding it's not the best for filling gaps. I'd go with more of a filler material or some hull and deck putty (from Mertons for example) The DPF stuff the factory used I've also been impressed with as it was the one product that held up fine in my Pulse project I'm currently undertaking.

Thank you, I will look to see if it is available in my area. You are correct
in the fact that it definatly bonds well. I have looked in west Marine and the putty they sell has an out of site price tag, but what else is new for West Marine. I could not pry my cap off at the motorwell. I actually heard the glass tearing. So I cut a small section away and removed that after the cap was off to prevent any more damage to the hull than what already had been done thru neglect from previous owners.

Thank you to you also. I am apprehensive to use a thickened resin,
in thinking it may just bond too well. I always try to think of the next guy that may just want to do some work of his own. I think I may have overdone my repair but what the H--L, I know I will never have to worry about the structural integrity for as long as I own it. And that will be quite awhile. I loved the older Checkmates when I was younger but just never went out and bought one.

You can get filler about anywhere as far as Auto Parts stores go. I used some Everglass short strand fiberglass filler for filling and that stuff works very well as a filler, and it also bonds. That I picked up from a Carquest Auto parts Store. If you have a OReily's auto parts place in your area they carry a good selection of filler as well.

When I took the deck off my 185 Pulse I used a air hammer chiesel and chipped as much of the bondo out as I could. I was able to get probably 75% of it out from under the splashwell cap and then used two hydraulic jacks across the stringers distriubuting the load force under them, and under the edges of the splashwell itself. Then I methoticly slowly raised one side, then the other once I heard any hint of noise of the bondo giving. It worked very well and did not leave any issues with any of the glass.

Starflight Restore

JT How is the sanding going? I have my Starflight on its back right now doing the same thing. Although I am just trying to make repairs instead of the entire thing because I did not want to do all that sanding. I sprayed the gel last night. I'll find out this evening if the color match is good enough or if I will end up coating the entire bottem like you.

I am about 3/4 way through the primary sanding. Went thru one spot so far. Guess I didn't apply enough gel to that area. Will apply more to that spot tomorrow morning.
By mid week I will be wet sanding with 800.
Hope to spray the sides next weekend with Imron. We will see if it is wishful thinking.

Well if this is the third time I sent this message to you, sorry I was having computer problems.

I sprayed the bottom Sunday afternoon. I uused the Duratec additive mixed with gelcoat at a 1 to 1 mixture. Came out nice with little orange peel and not very much sanding. I'm nearly complete with sanding now after only about 5 hours. Using 320 wet for primary sanding. I did a 2foot test area with the wool pad and a heavy compound last night and I don't see any reason to go beyond 320 grit. I did bust through into the original gel in several places as well. Mostly around thin areas in the strakes. When I have all sanding complete I'll see what I need to recoat. I may not do it if I don't bust through some more as it is not real noticable.

I'm definitely using the duratec additive with clear gel on the deck now that I see results. Of course, I will sand it through 800 or higher as its the show piece. As long as the spray is wet and heavy there is little orange peel. About what I would expect with a heavy auto-clear coat. Seems real hard to make it run though I almost made it run in a spot that I intentionaly shot very very heavy on a nearly vertical surface near the bow.

Sounds like you are making real good progress,
I am not making the progress I wanted. My daughter needed
my help at work and I just damaged the maniscus (hope I spelled it right)
in my right knee. Will have surgury next Wednesday. That will hold me up
for 2 weeks. I still have time. I have a lot of the little detail items
complete, so when it is time to rerig the boat, one weekend should take
care of that.

Today looks like a good day :thumb: I am finally getting the primer on the deck today. Tomorrow I will wet sand the primer and send it to the paint shop for the Imron top coat. I will finish sanding and polishing the new gel coat on the bottom during the week then off to the paint shop for the Imron on the sides. With any luck I will be rigging the boat during the Memorial Day weekend. :bounce:

05/15/10 - I am starting to feel like I have accomplished something after all the prep work.

Did most of the repair work with gel coat where the stress cracks were.

Now I really have a feeling of accomplishment. The deck is primed and I finally have figured out how to post a picture. Old dogs can learn new tricks.

I have been wanting,to stop by and check out progress, but I am always running late..I believe I have delivered to you last year,,I drive for Pjax/Vitran,you are across from the home depot on Indian rd?

Yes, you have the right place. Dam, it is a small world. I wish I knew
who you were when you were here.
Today I was sanding the primer on the deck for about 4-1/2 hours. I just called it quits. My arms have had enough. Got about 40% sanded. found a few pin holes in the areas where I gel coated the stress cracks. Have to pick up putty to clean that up. the paint shop is waiting for me to deliver the deck so they can apply the Imron.
