The Rebuild Begins

If you don't mind me asking, what are some of your previous engine specs? Like how much boost and and what size combustion chamber and compression ratio? What kind of heads? What kind of speeds were you getting out of it? I've been running a stock 330 horse 454 in my 251. I put a Weiand 177 supercharger and the Mercruiser 525 cam in it. Running about 4.5 lbs of boost. I'm running low 70's on a good day. This motor has lasted 9 years with the supercharger on it, it's time to go faster. Thanks!

The previous motor was just a stock heads, stock compression motor. I changed a few things on the stock motor only to find out once I added boost the motor had two different head gaskets on it. I had only tune the motor to 4400 rpm were it made 4 pounds of boost at about 3/4 throttle and the boat went 74.

The new motor is 8.75 compression with Edelbrock aluminum marine heads. These are the rectangle port heads which are 118cc combustion chamber. I'm running the crane 741 cam with a HP500 intake and a Nickerson carb. As for boost, it should be in the 5-6 pound range.

Badass dude!

Did you get her out this weekend? How did she run?

Dean

Just need to install spark plus/wires and set the timing. I can't wait to hear it run this weekend and get out on the boat. I haven't had the time I wanted to spend on the boat and now with some personal stuff going on I lost some motivation.

We, it's alive!!! As always with my build I feel like I take one step forward only to take two steps back. I spent 5 hours on Saturday trying to figure out a wiring issues with the MSD ignition only to realize, I still had the factory key on and tach wire on the coil and the MSD wires.

Once that was figured out, I was able to get the boat started and timing set. Take the boat to the lake, idle out, check the oil and it's milky. I had water seep up on the heads from the intake manifold during initial startup tightened the bolts and it went away on the top side but, now it's leaking into the oil. So I spent all Sunday changing the oil and will change it a few more times tonight. This has been my luck with this entire project.

Note to self, don't buy used parts :brickwall:

Been there, got screwed on that. That is whole reason I ditched my MPI setup was it wanted to leak water in due to bad machining by Arizona Speed and Marine. Good luck and I hope you get it figured out!

What gaskets and manifold are you running? I had much better luck getting the .125 thickness gaskets to seal. I get the ones with print o seal silicone rings on them as well.

It was just a stock GM performance gasket with the print o seal silicone rings and right stuff. Should have used hylomar, the intake does have some pitting.

I now have 5 hours on the motor and it went 74 with out even trying at 4400 rpm. It would bog down if it pushed the throttle any more than that and I could leave the throttle at the same position trim up and the rpm would increase from 3800 to 4400. It would bog at 3800 just like it does at 4400. When the secondary are starting to open. I pulled fuel out of it up top but, it didn't help the issue. Then after just cruising around for a while and coming off plane the Procharger didn't sound right. So I open the hatch and find the bearing is ****ed in the Procharger and now it needs rebuilt. Just another used part to come back and bit me in the ass.

I'm thinking this was my issue up top and it wasn't increasing boost as it should have been. As of right now the boat run 74 with about 50% throttle and this 30 pitch prop might not be a big enough.

Ughhhh....dude!! Sucks about the procharger, but sounds like that baby is gonna move based on where you have it now. You gonna try and get her rebuilt and back out this year, or winter project and out fresh next spring?

Talking with ProCharger today, either a new head unit is coming or I'll rebuild this one.

So it's been a while since my last update and that was mainly because, I was burnt out working on the boat after Cumberland. I rebuilt the head unit, got the boat ready for the Cumberland Poker run and headed down to the lake early to start getting the boat dialed in. Well, I couldn't get the fuel pressure under control and then randomly the boat just shuts off while cruising and that's how I ended my season.

So fast forward to Thursday, I thought I killed an MSD box in Cumberland and after spending 4 hours trying to diagnosis the ignition it turns out, I broke a few teeth off the distributor gear. So replaced the gear, pulled the pan, reran the return fuel lines and headed to the lake Saturday.

The tuning has started and as the boat sits it's tuned to about 4800 rpm and we just ran out of time. Right now it's turning a 30P prop and running 78 MPH. I'm exited to up the jets in the carb next weekend and see how the boat feels at 5300 and then see if it can swing a 32. Putting 5 hours on the boat over the weekend was a great feeling because, I was only able to put 5 hours on the boat all of last season.

I'm boating again and er-energized in my project, it's been a long road to this point.

Dude - thats badass on the progress. Solid numbers. Are you heading back to Cumberland this weekend, be at Alum, Salt Fork, etc?

I took my new Hustler Talon out twice so far. Once to Lake Norman, and last weekend to Salt Fork. Considering going to Alum this weekend.

Hope to meet/see you out sometime.

Dean
