Which prop?

Help from anyone... I have a 79 exciter with an 86 150 black max no jackplate. i was running a 21 pitch vengence and wonder what prop to buy for better performance with out jackplating it or raising the motor?

Try every prop you can get your hands on. Since you have a 150 mounted on the transom, one I'd definitely search out to borrow is a 22" Laser II. The Laser II works well on boats under 20' with lower horsepower and no jack plate.

You are probably right where you want to be with your current prop. You could spend a bunch of money on new props and gain only 1 or 2 MPH.
All performance props need the motor raised to work properly otherwise they do more harm than good. I would spend the money on an 8" manual JP instead. They can be found cheap used on BBC or S&F.

Mark is exactly right, I hang out on S&F and BBC, well I sneak around on BBC cause I was banned for telling the truth......Anyways, I have a 1982 Enticer with a 140 X flow Johnnyrude, 21 p SST ****ty prop with 1 bent ear, and trimmed out and tuned up pretty good all I could get was 48-49gps, I was pissed, So I talked to my bud's on Scream and Fly and posted here, we need a jack plate with these boats, Manual is all you need unless your going to ski with it quite a bit, then you'll want hydraulic for the adjustments.....Also a perf prop is simply what makes a boat go, and dude I sell boats for a living, and Im quite good, but selling alum fishing boats and toons, setup is not really a factor.....So ive been learning also, similar guys with my pkg or close can get 65 on gps with the above items,,,,Dude I found a 1 year old Slidemaster 6inch jack plate at one of my Brands factory, for only $100......and used Raker prop or Renegade for me is like $100-$200 depending on condition and work, but for that kind of money or boats will run away from the new generation I/O crowd....They wont be Hydrostream killers, but we can glide over the chop with a full load, uh, they cannot(on most models),but I still want a 'Stream, simply for the design and look, they are so ahead of their time in styling and hull development, heck a couple brands of Big Name boats have their hull design them today. and its 30 some yrs later.......Sorry went way off on a tangent, call or email if you want 920-295-2069 or worner_brannon@yahoo.com I might be able to find some ideas for you......

Hey thanks dude, ill keep you in mind. boat show is coming up in cleveland next week so im going to look around there also and ask questions

I wouldn't right off the 4 blade so quickly. I have 2 Mates. 21' Starliner and 16' Diplomat and I run Powertech 4 blades on both. The only thing faster has been the Tempest (which otherwise I hated with a passion), the 4 blades do almost everything else better.
Probably still need the JP to get the best out of them though.

Some guys love them and maybe they are great on some rigs. My experience; poor holeshot, ill handling, ventilates in turns, etc. Todays 4 blades give up only 1-2 MPH top end and in some cases are faster. The tradeoff is great holeshot, great mid-range acceleration, great handling, little steering torque, can be run higher...almost no downside really. They are especially good with the 2.5L Mercs because the small hub over/through exhaust allows them to spool up quickly.
I traded a guy my 25" Tempest for a 25" TRO4 after less than a week. Good trade in my mind!

What Powertech are you running you your Diplomat?? I am in the process of redoing my little Diplomat and my prop people for my Formula told me to go with a Powertech. I just installd a CMC electric jackplate with 5.5 inches of setback ans hydraulic steering. I have a 115 Rude on the back of the little 16, so we are thinking a 13.25X21 RXB-4 Powertech.

Bill

Mark- What are you running on the starliner propwise? Also, what is your engine? I've got a 3 litre 225 merc on my starliner with a 21 pitch laser 2. i'm thinking of something in a 23p for higher top end (I'm pretty happy with the handling otherwise)-any thoughts? You steered me right on the rxb4 on my predictor with the 115 merc.
By the way, Bill - i've got a practically new 21p rxb4 in the box if you're interested-excellent prop. Good hit out of the hole, bow lift and nearly same top end (1-1.5 mph less according to the gps but only if you had a chance to really wind it up for a long stretch in perfect conditions) as the 3 blade 23 ss before it since it's got some cupping. No ventilation though and strong grip in the turns.

I run a 26" Laser II on my 16' Pulsare with a 125 Merc and a CMC 5.5 plate set 2.5 below the pad. With this setup I can run right around 60 on the G.P.S.For skiing I use a 21" Laser II.My motor only turns 5300 max R.P.M.
I would think a 24" Laser II would be right up your alley.
Just letting you know what works for me.:surf:

These props give great bow lift.

You ran this prop on a 115? What RPM @ WOT were you able to turn with it with a plate or with out? I just want to make sure the 21P is correct.

Yes, I just may be interested, what ya looking for it??

On my unmodified 1991 merc 115 with a recommended wot of 4750-5250 it was turning around 5100-5200 at highest trim before it would actually go a little higher rpm and start slipping inefficiently. The 21p was the highest that powertec makes for this prop. motor was mounted directly-no plate and it was doing 52.6 on the gps whereas the 23p ss would go to 54 on the gps under long, perfect stretches.
I paid list price to powertech ( I forget exactly how much-if you call them they'll tell you-somewhere around 400) because I needed in it time for july 4 weekend. You can actually get it through a retailer (Mark can give us the name-i forget) for around 50 or 70 less if you don't mind waiting a couple weeks. Either way you probably want it ported(free of charge) so it revs up a little faster.
If you're interested make me an offer.
If, on the other hand, you or someone else has a 23-25p TRO4 that's what I'd probably be putting it toward anyhow.

Let me talk to Powertech, I am not sure if the 21 will be enough, but that may not be too bad. I am running a CMC Electri plate, so I should be able to turn more rpm's, my Rude is rated to 5500.

God, I hate making open offers, I do not want to insult anyone..., so if you can throw at me what you would like!!! I will say this, I can pick up Bravo I's like new for 200 apiece for my Formula and those retail for 600 new...

Just to make sure, will the hub that is in your PT for a 13 spline Rude???

Don't think so- It's set up for a merc but if you're interested in putting in a new hub drop me a pm. Probably not worth it though. Good luck.
On second thought- just went back and checked the post where it was recommended to me by Mark that I pick up the prop. He said the cheapest place was pitstop marine. At the time I looked around and they were by far the cheapest but ended up buying from the manufacturer (for nearly $100 more!) because they had a much faster delivery. I just went and checked (and saw they've got the TRO4 I want at a great price). They've got your rxb4 for $309. That's with the right hub and they'll port it for free. I don't think you're gonna do too much better than that as I don't think the rxb4 comes up on the market used very often. Believe me, I've checked
