Mr. Comb, if you are telling that seats going to look like what skater offers that’s very cool. I’m big fan of high back seats. The windshield, I can live with, if it’s above eye level when seated. Don’t take dated quote as dig against the boat. I’m very interested in final product. In fact, I’m going to in your neck of the woods next week for six days. How far is Dayton from your plant 3-4 hours? I sure would like to come up and take tour.

TALL WINDSHIELD??? KIP, I DON'T THINK THE WINDSHIELD LOOKS TALL AT ALL, IN FACT IT BLENDS NICELY WITH THE LINES OF THE BOAT. TO ME, AND MANY OTHERS I'M SURE, THE BOAT LOOKS LIKE A LONGER PULSARE. WHAT I WOULD BE MORE CONCERNED WITH IS AN UPDATED BOTTOM TO CARRY MORE SPEED WITH GOOD HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A SINGLE SMALL STEP; JUST ENOUGH TO BREAK THE FRICTION AND AIR THE HULL OUT A LITTLE!!! THE TALL BACK BUCKETS WITH DROP-OUTS ARE A GREAT IDEA!!

This kind of gives you an idea of why its best if you have a leader like your dad designing these boats. If you had a comittee like this working on it you would have a mess. Its great that you shared the development process with us and its nice that everyone is sharing there opinions. But remember everyones tastes are different. I think it looks great and adds another model to the line with a new signature look, an obvious progression 1600,1850,2100 etc.

My 1987 28 foot twin O/B is very well layed out. I am always getting compliments. See pictures in the Buy / Sell forum. Sleep overs in the cabin, the porta potty, frig, table, bunks all make it a true weekend boat. The stand up bolsters, the set backs on the transom, off shore controlls make sure people know it's performance orientated. Any leasons learned from that boat that you could bring into the new would insure success. Go for the gusto - full cabin, stand up drop/down bolsters and set backs for the OBs.

My opinion (like it matters)... I would love to see that hull with a small "PAD" for us performance nuts (like Velocity uses) or steps to help out with efficiency and performance??? I think you guy's would hit a home-run and keep pace with the other boats in that market segment. Do you know that they started a Single Engine Outboard (S.E.O.) racing class held at several of the offshore boating events now for boats 21' & up??? This new hull might get Checkmate into the race seen with a 300X... (anyone interested)!!!
Anyway, I'm sure it will be a nice addition to the line-up!!! Looks like a nice hull to hang my two 2.5L's on... you know, the next "family boat" thing! Jim

JRUMON, I LIKE YOUR PERFORMANCE ORIENTED IDEAS!! A CHECKMATE WITH A VARIABLE DEGREE DEADRISE PAD BOTTOM (LIKE VELOCITY) BUT WITH 2 SMALL (1.5-2.5 INCH) STEPS BUILT INTO THE HULL BOTTOM (I ALWAYS LIKED THE SMALL STEP IN THE STARFLITES) TO RELIEVE THE FRICTION FACTOR AND AIR OUT THE HULL MORE. (MAYBE PUT STEPS ONLY IN THE PAD; THAT WOULD BE DIFFERENT!! COULD BE A NEW AWESOME HULL DESIGN) ALSO A SMALL (6"-8") NOTCH IN THE TRANSOME (SO YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TO ADD HUGE SETBACK) WOULD BE A NICE ADDITION. KIP, MIKE, AND FAMILY, YOU GUYS BUILD GREAT BOATS (JUST THE WAY THEY ARE); THESE IDEAS ARE JUST SUBTLE HINTS (DREAMS) FROM THE MANIACS THAT HAVE COME TO LOVE CHECKMATES!!! I too am impressed with asking the "fanatics" for their feedback. I own 2 Mates and would own 5 if my wife would let me. I'm obviously a big fan and consider Checkmates the best in their class, but I see three things that could use improvement(if they haven't already, I'm not sure).
1)Are you going to go to wood-free transoms to eliminate the potential of transom rot?
2)Have you made improvements in the floor construction (eg. stapling floor to stringers and creating minute passageways for water into the stringers and floatation foam)? It seems just about everybody has had to redo the floors on their older Mates. I had to do both of mine.
3)Is it my imagination or have the gunwales have become wider, reducing the interior cockpit size. The Pulsare 1600 does not have room enough to walk between the front buckets. Even the Family and Performance Boat feature article mentioned this. My 1985 16.5' Diplomat has the interior space of most 18 footers.
Other than that, thanks for not falling into this boring melting pot where you cannot tell one manufacturer's boat from the next.
