Ideal set back for Pulsare

I have a 2100BR using a 12" mini bracket and a 6" power jackplate. I had to add a 5 degree wedge to compensate for the 5 degree negative angle built into the 12" bracket. As a result, I have about 18.5" of setback. This is with a Yamaha 3.3L engine and short shaft 16" mid. Initially I had an engine dunking problem coming off plane but a drag foil on the cav plate took care of that. I usually run a vented Bravo I style prop. With 4-5 people in the boat, it pulls skiers, tubes, and wake boards with out a problem. I can stay on plane down to about 17 mph easily. Also, it is very sensitive to trim and will porpoise at 30-40 mph unless trimmed all the way negative.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this much set back but it works for me. With a big block DFI engine, I'd stay around 12-14" for all around use.

What kind of numbers have you seen with your setup? Im building a 2400 w/ a pro300 vrod currently. 6" hyd plate
These are the details I think your looking for and if I missed something just let me know.
2012 2400BRX with 300 Pro Verado

It came with a Tempest Plus 25P and best I could run with just me and 3/4 tank was 5300RPM and 62MPH on GPS. Keep in mind the motor only had 14 hours on it and didn't want to keep it WOT too long to fine tune trim and motor height but think it was about the best I could do after 6 runs.

When I would load the boat with 3 adults and few kids i could barely reach 5K RPM and 55mph. I did not mess with the speed much with the kids onboard:)

At 23 hours on the motor I changed props to a 21P Tempest Plus I borrowed from my 2000BRX I'm currently selling. With 2 adults and full tank I was able to max RPM's at about 6400 and go 65mph GPS. Also keep in mind I have a ski tower that may add to a little wind loading.

I think the optimum prop would be a tempest plus 23P that should bring the RPM's down to ~6K and hopefully post 67 mph ish. If anyone has any other suggestions on prop options please let me know.

Thanks,
ChuckB

Thanks for the info. It seems like the 23 tempest would be best on that motor.
The 4 strokes like to be run as close to wot as possible and make their max torque and hp at that point. With the hyd jack plate it allows you to find the sweet spot by starting at a nominal height in relation to the pad, run to wot and max trim out, then start increasing jack height until speed starts to drop off due to cavitation, drop it 1" and you should be close to optimum. Keep in mind your rpm will increase as you increase height so the 23 should give you enough room for adjustments. Also, remember these vrods like to be run hard hence the need for the high rpm's to keep the rings seated. Some verado owners that babied their motors during break in have had the issue of "making oil" due to the rings not being worn in properly and then raw fuel dilutes the oil. However, this is a rare condition just something to keep in mind. And remember check your oil !!!
It looks like your at about 10% slip with the 21p. Do you have the 20" shaft motor ? If so the 23p should get you close to 71 with the same amount of slip @ 6400 rpm.

Thanks for the very helpful feedback jjg! I will be doing some fine tuning this weekend and will plan to get my hands on a Tempest 23P.

Thank you,

A little chine walk but not much with the hydro steering. the trophy is bone stock. I bought a new pro max 26 but it was slower, good prop which will be my spare.

low water pick up!

So i have been thinking of doing some set up changes on my 21 close deck! im going to add some setback and dont know if its worth adding a hydraulic or just keep it manual! and then of course i have a stock 3.0 lower unit with only side intake! I was thinking of adding low water nose so i can lift it higher.Or do you think it will slow it down because high 70s will probably be all she has with a 225 opti!Does anyone thinks its worth it or i have a newer style case with the stock bullet intake sitting in the shop just needs internals! I would love to buy a 300xs some day just dont know when. Thanks

Don't waste $$ putting a cone on a fishing opti. My opti was 3 mph slower than my 225 efi, exact same everything else.

Get into an "XS" or a 250XB. I've had 2 21's w/225's 78-79 mph. 10-12" manual plate and a 27P Trophy Plus with some work done to it.

Ok So is it worth the 1k for a hydaulic plate and 300 for a set back! or just put a manual 14 on it! Just wondering on how much you all move it up or down when you know were the sweet spot is! Today is the last day for 10% off at bobs Machine! killer deal!

I say no to $1k for hydro plate unless you are going to put a 250/300XS on and are chasing every last MPH.

I really enjoyed my manual plate setup, no fuss, ran great.

Is it possible to competly eleminate chine-walk on 2100 pulsare w/250 hs.
And with what set-up??

My motor was too low before and it drove pretty bad untill i raised it, it drives better but you still have too steer it because its on a pad at high speeds and you have to balance it there with the wheel!
